Windows 10: Firefox Quantum vs. Edge

Discus and support Firefox Quantum vs. Edge in Browsers and Email to solve the problem; Using Firefox or IE is like going back to the 90's with all these annoying buttons and bars and things. Chrome is (I suppose, grudgingly) better than... Discussion in 'Browsers and Email' started by lpatrick, Nov 21, 2017.

    Firefox Quantum vs. Edge

I'm using Ubuntu lately, so i have no access to Edge, Firefox 57 (Quantum) is pretty good anyway and i'm very satisfied
    with it *Smile

I had to go to an internet Café today to print out some documents as I don't have a printer. They used Ubuntu (a change from pirated Windows last time I went).

To be honest, going to an Internet Café was like going to the '90's. As was using Ubuntu - the *Start button didn't work!

I'm not against either (please don't misunderstand) but it was like going back in time. Thank God Ctrl+P worked in Ubuntu or I'd probably still be there reliving my youth. Coffee, cigs and terrible house music - what more could you want?

Oh i know what you mean, the old *Start problem never really fixed, but after a while you get used to it and does not matter anymore *Smile

    Firefox Quantum vs. Edge

I clicked that link and got the page in my current browser - IE.

The 'see details here' link confirms that the tests were: "The Microsoft Edge team ran the Google Octane 2.0 and Apple Jetstream 1.1 benchmarks on the latest versions of Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox as of 3/28/2017" so that was using Firefox 52.

You can run Octane 2.0 yourself here Octane 2.0 JavaScript Benchmark
    and Jetstream here JetStream 1.1

Edge (1709) and Firefox 57 score almost identically for me, but Edge still has a very small 'edge' over FF in Octane, somewhat more in Jetstream (I don't have Chrome to test).

  5. I do not know what buttons and bars you are referring to. Firefox was not around in the 90's.

    Here's mine

    OS Windows 10

    Octane 2

    Firefox 57 26041
    Edge 22986

    Jetstream:

    Edge 180.38
    Firefox 57 150.28

So it seems they did a good job at speeding up Firefox

    Well, all this stuff..

I don't know what half of it means so I just ignore it. Should I search in the address bar or the search box? It seems to make no difference so why are there 2 of them? What is the chrome icon thing for? Or the blue S? Or the green thing on the left? Or the green arrow on the settings on the right? Sure I could find out but it just looks a bit antiquated. Not a bad thing - just not matching my aesthetics I guess.

You are quite right - it was 2004 apparently. It seems a long time ago anyway *Smile

    I don't have that. A Chrome toolbar add-on?
    Nor that. Another add-on? Skype?
If I'm not mistaken that's the Tor 'onion' icon - so another add-on then?
Now that is the only native FF function - it's to notify you that there's a new version available - I think it's called Quantum...

I gave Firefox Quantum another try and very impressed with the speed (very snappy) font rendering and graphics look great and like the new design which is very easy to use and set up nicely...I did make it my main browser, in fact....Only thing is i am noticing a lot of memory consumption as compared to chrome and edge...

When it initially starts it is fine but after a while, it seems to increase a lot...Have there been other reports about that? Could it also relate to it's use of all the memory cores (i have an Intel I5 which has 4 cores)...? I do have 8 gb of total ram, but where as before my total average (using resource monitor) was about 2800 mb and now with firefox running it is about 3800 mb, so that is quite a jump up...Hate to see so much memory being used because otherwise i really love it....However, that's like a whole extra gb!

I could go back to Edge instead, but as i said, really like this a lot...*Sad
Considering Mozilla is boasting about a reduced use of ram, this seems rather odd that it would do this on my system...

After downloading Firefox Quantum I found no substantial reason for a lightweight user such as myself to leave the comfort of Edge. I do wish those who do migrate to FQ the best.

    Cheers!

If you do not need to change no reason to do so, i find firefox better because it does not get in my way and i have the same user experience both in windows and linux, that would be impossible to do with Edge.

    Happy Edge-ing *Smile

That's not the new firefox quantum it's the old one (with several plugins, someone must have installed in your pc maybe some malware i guess since you state you don't know what they are).

I think you miss one of the key points of firefox, i.e. it is higly configurable, here a comparison beetwen edge (on the left, no customization) and firefox 57 (on the right), it seems pretty simple to me, anyway user experience is somehow quite subjective.

    Firefox Quantum vs. Edge

Actually, no - it is not malware. It is the TOR browser bundle.

I do now know what these buttons are for (I didn't bother looking before) TOR, User Agent switcher (possibly useful) and HTTPS everywhere (certainly useful). @Bree mentioned that the last one (the green arrow on settings) was to indicate a possible update to Firefox but that is the torproject problem not mine.

I was only really moaning about aesthetics looking old fashioned though. Otherwise all browsers seem pretty much identical except what synch options are available to your other devices.

I do notice you don't have a search box - I wonder why I do. Please don't answer that though - I'll look it up myself *Wink

When I installed Firefox 57 it had the search box at the top right, that was the first thing I got rid of then I got rid of the space's at each side.

Did you install Firefox 57 you can tell in your pic it was not 57 because 57 has square tab's yours were rounded.
