As whs suggested get yourself an alternate way of backup your PC, invest in external drive and cable, it is fool proof way to get in an emergency, I would suggest free clone Macrium software to do the work, it is up to you to decide. Read up on cloning on your HD, once you do it, you never go back to image backup, you would go with third party clone.

    To chipwood,
If you are able to login, you can run the image recovery with the method I posted on post #13.
If you cannot login, then you can use your Dell Installation DVD and select Repair option which will also lead you to system image recovery.

    In case you need it....................

    Agreed...

I've switched to Macrium way back with Windows 7, after the first problem with recovery of Windows backup. The issue in my case may have been due to user error, or with the limitations of Windows backup. In either case, the third-party image backups are more flexible and less error prone than Windows backup. Just my nickel (adjusted for inflation)...

First system image backup: is this right?

this is real life experience just yesterday, I was infected with so called 'ransomware' and screen looks very alike to MS, so I just replaced my HD which I have cloned nearly every 10 days or so and in business within few minutes, I have to tell the scammers, not in my life time would they get the money from me. My Macrium solved the problem.
Disclosure macrium does not pay me to write this nor do I work for them.

    but get
First system image backup: is this right? [IMG]
I have followed those instructions and the same thing happens, so how do I download the ISO?

BTW has anyone experience of Cobian as a backup tool? I heard it recommended somewhere, but can't recall when or where. My forgettery is improving day by day.*Eek The less complicated the tool is the better!

    To : chipwood

Not sure what did you do to get the error message from MCT.

If you care to, please use the Tech Bench link and follow my simple steps :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...brrWLRbagYCa0w

scroll down to Select Edition > click the pointer at the right and select Windows 10 > click Confirm.
click the pointer and select Language > make sure you pick the same language the computer is now running > click Confirm
select the bit version, 32 or 64-bit. Make sure you select the same bit version as the computer is now running.
at the bottom, click the pointer next to Save > click Save As > navigate to a folder of your choice > click the chosen folder > click Save
The iso will start downloading to your chosen folder.
You can burn the iso to a bootable media, DVD or USB, for future reinstall.

If your mandate is Simplicity rather than Sophistication, then nothing is more simpler than the built-in system image backup.

You have to try out other programs yourself to determine which one suits you best.
What works for others does not necessarily work for you.
