MPC-HC. on a relatively small, hi-dpi touch screen without mouse/keyboard?
    Much fun with that...
But I agree with you regarding VLC.

You didn't get what I meant... I was not speaking about human interaction problems, I was talking about VLC being a bad player in general "under the hub". Of course MPC would be bad for touch input too, but so is normal VLC.

I've understood what you were talking about, but on the other hand, you recommend MPC-HC, which is also unusable on some devices, although for (probably) different reasons.
I don't know why most people here assume, that everybody else is running W10 on a Desktop/Laptop with large monitors and mouse/kb attached.
EDIT: even Kodi is more usable, than VLC/MPC-HD (and compared with VLC a lot less CPU hungry).
What we tablet/convertible users need, is a decent, touch-friendly media-player, not a W32 software with an antiquated "Win95 GUI".
But I've almost gave up on this...

First version of VLC UWP App for Windows 10 to be released today

I have found the VLC Media Player that you get from their website to be quite good myself...and it plays all video formats (even the few that the movies/tv windows 10 app does not play)...It isn't really well set up to be used as a music player but sure is good on video playing...

However, the app version is a whole different thing...very unstable, buggy, crashed a lot, froze on certain video files and would not even search properly for a song when used as a music player...It even knocked out my video driver a couple of times...

So, as far as the APP version is concerned, i hope when they release that new version it is a MASSIVE improvement over the last version (the one that is currently offered in the microsoft store)...If it is not, i will stick with the website version for sure....I like using store apps when possible, but not if they are as bad as the VLC app currently is...

VLC for desktop plays all my commercial DVD's, MPC-HC will not.

    1. no one uses dvds anymore in 2016, not even blurays
    2. of course mpc plays those fine
    3. vlc is buggy/terrible in using hardware acceleration
    4. vlc gui is a mess since over 10 years unchanged
    5. vlc devs are lazy and slow, their ticket system is a mess
    6. vlc uses way more cpu compared to other players

I still need to use Windows Media Player because VLC cant play BubbleUPNP tethered m3u/IPTV.

    1. I guess I'm the one exception! Of my most cherished media, I like to own a physical copy.
    2. Not 'out of the box' on my machine, it won't.
    3. I don't have a problem with the desktop version.
    4. Works for me.
    5. tenforums.com members are lazy and slow too, cuz we're all volunteers as well!
    6. Most modern machines can handle it.

VLC, MPC-HC, Windows Media Player + Co., all of them are outdated W32 dinosaur software.
None of them has a Chromecast/Miracast option, the Gui's are horrible with their W95 design and the "settings" are completely overloaded.
And exactly thats the reason, why I boot Android on my Baytrail Convertible, when it comes to media streaming/watching.
Or, when I just want to use Chromecast, I stream it from my Android Smartphone.
There are NO real serious alternatives on Win10, especially if you want touch/CC support!

  11. I use DVDs all the time. It actually infuriated me that Microsoft brutally removed native DVD playback from the OS. VLC desktop was extremely handy for DVD playback on our now deceased laptop. Not really into VLC that much now as our current machine came with a Cyberlink suite so we use that for DVDs.

MS seems to want us to forget optical media exists.

I hope the new app is better because out of curiousity I downloaded the app months ago and it was pretty terrible. I think I wanted to play MPG or MPEG videos we have had stored for a longtime which were all captured by our video camera (another brutally removed native playback feature by MS!!!!) and VLC app couldn't play them too well, stuttering along if memory serves, whilst the desktop app was perfect.

I tried it...looks nicer then old version but still appeared to be buggy...It is actually still in beta which is why you probably have to get it from the link (it doesn't as yet show up in the microsoft store unless you go through that link)...Videos often played with a broken up picture and search is pretty bad too...

I'd say...still not ready for prime time....so far, nothing like the original (non store app) version...
I removed it for now...looks like it needs a long way to go yet...
