When updating your SQL server (Standalone) with a Cumulative Update (CU) you might check the error in the Rule Check Result.

Rule "Not clustered or the cluster service is up and online." failed.

The machine is clustered, but the cluster is not online or cannot be access from one of its nodes. To continue determine why the cluster is not online and rerun setup instead of rerunning the rule since the rule can no longer detect a cluster environment correctly.



This is a very strange message, especially since the SQL server is a stand alone server and there is no cluster. After a restart of the server and re-trying the update, the problems still persists.

After a lot of investigation, this issue is nothing related to SQL, but WMI. This can be verified by opening the WMI Management using the command WMIMGMT.MSC, right-click on WMI Control (Local) and click on Properties.



If your entries show Invalid Class, as the above screenshot, we need to re-compile the MOF files using the following command from a command prompt as Administrator.

mofcomp C:\Windows\System32\WBEM\cimwin32.mof

The result should be as below



After this, if you rerun the WMIMGMT.MSC and the same process, the WMI should look like this.



You can now re-run the SQL update and it will update with no issues, thus solving the problem permanently.

Windows 2019 Datacenter Cluster - Configuring Cluster Aware Updating

Hello, everyone.

I am trying to configure Cluster Aware Updating (CAU) on a 2-node, Windows 2019 Datacenter Cluster. Using Failover Cluster Manager, when I run the "Analyze cluster updating readiness" function, I receive a report with two errors and one warning.

The first error is "The failover cluster nodes must be enabled for remote management via WMIv2". They already are. When I run "WINRM QUICKCONFIG -q" on each node, I get no errors; in fact I get "WinRM service is already running on this machine. WinRM is
already set up for remote management on this computer."

The second error is "Windows PowerShell remoting should be enabled on each failover cluster node". It already is. When I run "Enable-PSRemoting" on each node, I get no errors;. in fact I get no messages back at all.

The one warning is "The CAU clustered role should be installed on the failover cluster to enable self-updating mode". I think this will go away once I get CAU set up and running on this cluster.

My command to add CAU to my cluster ends up being:

ES19TESTCL1CAU is a computer name I pre-staged in my Active Directory.

The results of running that PowerShell script was: "Validation failed for adding CAU cluster role." I'm guessing once I figure out and fix what's causing the validation errors, the script will work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. This is my first
cluster.

 

Windows Server 2016 Cluster Services failing to start

After adding the feature to the server, the cluster service will not start.

Event log says:

The Cluster Service service terminated with the following service-specific error: The system cannot find the file specified.

While nothing is listed, the service uses clussvc.exe

The file is present in the %systemroot%\cluster directory.

When I try and execute this file as administrator in the command prompt, I get:

I have reinstalled the OS and all updates are current. This works just fine on the other servers. It's making me crazy.

 

Perform Upgrade of Windows Cluster & SQL Cluster from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2

I am looking to perform Upgrade of Windows cluster on which SQL cluster is running 2008 R2 and i have to upgrade the OS to 2012 R2.

Please can some one suggest or share some step by step guide which i can refer.
