In this post, we will describe the possible solutions to fix Service Control Manager error 7001 on WIndows 10. When this error occurs, the laptop freezes and users have to hard reset it. Some users have reported that they started facing this issue after upgrading their system. Some of the users also experienced the issue after a clean install of Windows 10 from an ISO image.

The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because the dependency service or group failed to start.

You could see the error occurring for:

    • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service
    • Computer Browser service
    • FTP Publishing Service
    • World Wide Web Publishing Service
    • Site Server LDAP Service
    • Microsoft NNTP Service
    • Microsoft SMTP Service
    • Etc.

Service Control Manager (SCM) is a special system process under the Windows NT family of operating systems, which starts, stops, and interacts with Windows service processes. This Event ID 7001 is usually seen when a system critical Service fails to start because one or more services on which it is dependant on, fail to start.

Fix Service Control Manager error 7001

If you see Service Control Manager Event ID on your computer, try the following solutions:

    1. Find dependencies of a Windows Service
    2. Improve the performance of your system by optimizing drives.
    3. Reset the TCP/IP in Windows 10.
    4. Start the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service.
    5. Disable TCP Port Sharing feature from Control Panel.
1] Find dependencies of a Windows Service

    • Fix Service Control Manager Event ID 7001 on Windows 10 Windows-10-Service-Dependencies.png

Identify the Service that has failed and find the Dependencies of that Service.

You need to open Windows Services Manager, select the service in question, right-click on it, and select Properties.

    Switch to the Dependencies tab.

Here you can see a list of services on which this service depends and other services which depend on this service.

Make sure that these are started.

2] Improve the performance of your system by optimizing the drives

Drive optimization helps you improve the performance of your computer. Windows 10 comes with a built-in tool, named Defragment and Optimize Drives. You can use this tool to optimize only the NTFS, FAT, or FAT 32 drives.

Fix Service Control Manager Event ID 7001 on Windows 10 service-control-manager-error_7001.png

Type Optimize drives in the Windows 10 search box and click on the app to launch it. After launching the app, you will see the percentage of fragmentation of each disk on your computer in the Current status column. Disk fragmentation should always be less than 10%. If you find any of your disk(s) fragmented more than 10%, it needs to be optimized. To optimize the drive, select it and click on the Optimize button.

If the Defragment and Optimize Drives tool is not showing any of your system drive(s), it is because of the following reasons:

    1. The disk is already in use by another program.
    2. You have formatted the disk using a file system other than NTFS, FAT, or FAT 32.
    3. The drive is the network drive.
    4. The disk has some error or may be corrupted. In this case, we suggest you repair the drive and then try to optimize it using the Disk Defragment tool.
    3] Reset TCP/IP in Windows 10

You may also get Service Control Manager error 7001 on your Windows 10 computer when the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service fails to start. If this is the case with you, resetting the TCP/IP or Internet Protocol may help.

4] Enable the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service

If resetting the TCP/IP or Internet Protocol did not fix the issue for you, try this method. Many users have reported that after starting the TCP.Net Port Sharing Service, they got rid of the error Service Control Manager error 7001.

    2. Now, scroll down the list and locate Net.Tcp Port Service.
    3. Double-click on it and select its startup type Automatic from the drop-down menu.
    4. You will see the status of the service. If it is stopped, click on the Start button and then click OK.
    5. Restart your computer and see if it helps.

If this did not resolve the issue, move on to the next method.

5] Disable TCP Port Sharing feature from Control Panel

Many users have also reported that disabling the TCP Port Sharing feature from Control Panel helped them solve the issue.

    Event ID 7001

I've had the same problem on a laptop after a clean install of Windows 10 (I downloaded the ISO for that). Also the laptop froze during boot after an automatic update.

In the eventlog there was Event-ID 7001 about "Net.Tcp Listener Adapter", stating it is depending on "Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service".

I started up "services.msc" and in that console "Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service" was disabled. I changed this startup type to "Automatic" and it solved the problem after a reboot. The laptop did not freeze during boot (I booted 3 times and it is stable for
    about 30 minutes now).
