As a test, change the data value of the ProfileImagePath DWORD for the ...1001 key to C:\Users\vickerse, delete the ...1001.bak key, and restart the computer.

 

Thanks. It took 10 minutes to restart, but unfortunately it's still a temporary profile. The name has remained changed tho and it hasn't created a new one.

 

In that case, you might create a new account to see if it works properly. If so, you could make it an administrator, and use it instead.

 

I tried to remove the temp account through the method which you wrote about. After completing the changes in the regedit, I restarted the computer; however, the temp account issue still remains. I am unsure what to do.

Double check to make sure that the SID key without .bak for your user profile has the correct path for the ProfileImagePath value.

 

Thank you. As you can see, there is no SID key without ".bak" at the end. i dont know why there isnt one there.

 

In that case, try renaming the SID key with .bak at the end to only remove the ".bak" part from it, then restart the computer to see if the account will work properly afterwards.

In that case, see if you are able to sign in to a different administrator account (ex: built-in Administrator), and see if you are able to rename the SID key in that account instead. *Smile

 

What should happen after completing step 9? Will I be able to log back in to my original windows user account, just without the original user settings being present? Will all of my programs and files remain untouched? Thanks for your help Brink.

Yes, you should be able to sign in as usual without anything being affected. The method in the tutorial is only to correct the path of the user profile folder in the registry to stop getting a temp profile. *Smile

The temp account that came up after I logged in had missing items on the desktop and factory settings elsewhere. I still see my original user account folder located under the directory c:\Windows\Users\
When I first had this problem last week, I found some information saying to just delete the key ending in .bak, as that was the temporary user profile. I'm thinking this person may have been confused.
I was, however, able to stop getting a temporary profile after log-in by simply deleting the file ending in .bak while keeping the other. Hmm. ?? The account looked the same as the temp but I could save data and files when I logged out.

So after finding this thread, I restored the deleted .bak key from RegBack to see if the pathway was correct- which it was.

Now, by deleting both files, is it possible for my programs to be restored to my desktop and my files located back under This PC rather than having to find them in c:\Windows\Users"(Original User Account Name)"?

 

Yeah, deleting only the .bak key is for a different profile error message that doesn't apply to this temp one.

Using the method in the tutorial should restore your account's profile to have things back to normal. *Smile

 

Unfortunately, this method didn't work for me. I logged in again to a identical looking profile as the temporary account without the error message, after deleting both keys. Still missing desktop items, default background, cleared memory, empty directory. It seems to have created yet another user profile.

 

In that case, you could try doing a system restore using a restore point dated before all this happened to hopefully fix it.
