Windows 10: Flash drives open, but keep getting "this file does not have an app associated....."

Windows 10, HP laptop

f:\ This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app, or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page.


All I'm doing is inserting the flash drive into the USB drive. I can access the drive and see all the files on it.

But, this message keeps popping up on every flash drive.


I did not get this message a couple weeks ago.

Removing File Association that opens file with specific app

How do I reset a file to its original file association (in this case "NO ASSOCIATION")?

• I mistakenly tried to open a ".pieceshash" file [ b4ec92e20ca80c0524198cc75cededf138401f97.pieceshash ] and
• chose to open it with IE (with the check box set to always open with this app).

Now I cannot remove the file association. Please Help. Thanks

I think it's the extra steps that he doesn't like. But that should also work.

• What file are you trying to open?

This issue is caused if the file is not associated with any of the application or program to open it.

If those files are the pictures as I can see that you are trying to access the picture folder. I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if the issue resolves.

• Right click on the file and select Open with.
• Select Photo App or Photo Gallery.
• Double click and check if you are able to open that file.
