Windows 10: folder doesn't show in file explorer, but can find contents in search

Help!


I had a Turbotax folder under Documents on my hard drive. I had to uninstall and reinstall Turbotax due to an error I was getting doing my taxes. I also had to contact Turbotax and a guy walked me through installing an update as administrator.


That got Turbotax to work and it saves my data to the hard drive properly, however, if I use file explorer and bring up the documents directory, the Turbotax folder does not show. When I do a search on the C: hard drive, the files are there.


I tried recreating the Turbotax folder and it asked me if I wanted to merge with the existing Turbotax folder. I said yes and it appeared to work, however it still does not show the folder under documents. I looked to make sure hidden files was turned on also.


I am at a loss as to what to do. I don't know if it affected other folders under documents or other parts of my hard drive.


Does anyone have any suggestions for me? by the way, I used the DIR command in the CMD window and that also does not show the folder.


I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Search Content of MHT files

Most probably, this is a problem with the search and indexing of your Windows 10 computer. For us to provide the best resolution possible, we would like to clarify the following:

• Are you trying to search the content of MHT files using Cortana?
• Have you tried searching it using the File Explorer?
• Are you using a third-party app to search for the content of MHT files?

As an initial troubleshooting step, we suggest that you run the troubleshooter for search and indexing. To run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, follow these steps:

• Click the Start button and select the Settings
  icon.
• Choose Update & Security from the list.
• Click Troubleshoot in the left pane of the window.
• Under Find and fix other problems.
• Select Search and Indexing and click Run the troubleshooter.

We'll keep an eye out for your response.

Is your file in an excluded location? See Settings:





I suggested you do this, and asked about the History...

If you had responded to that, we would know if content indexing was, in principle, working and you could search successfully or not for at least one file type.

You mention php file types. I've never indexed these, and indeed php does not appear in my list of file types.
I asked about an ifilter. I do not know what would be applicable to a php file type.

I've found a couple, one can be opened with notepad.

When I added php as a file type it is indexed as text:

How do you start a search?
- the box in file explorer?
Note that file explorer must be open at a point in the file hierarchy above the item to be found.
- the search box (by default in the taskbar)?

Apropriate screenshots could be helpful.

 

File Explorer won't search contents of files - Windows 10 Anniversary


Hi, have you checked the files are actually selected in Indexing Options? I.e. the folders containing them are indexed?

This is the clue:

• If you're still unable to search file contents, try:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Right-click the folder you want to search, e.g. My Documents
3. Click: Properties
4. On the General tab, Click: Advanced
5. On the Advanced Attributes dialog, select:
   
   [x] Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties
6. Click: OK
7. Click: OK

• You may also add additional folders to the list of indexed locations.
• After updating your indexing options, you may have to wait some time before your results will appear as expected, as Windows must rebuild its index with the contents of the new files.

Personally I avoid explorer search as far as possible, and use
Locate32
Utrasearch does the same job, with a modern GUI, better than Everything.
However, these don't index content.
Locate32 adds a file content search for some types.
