Windows 10: Folder Permissions Aren't Working

We recently switched from a laptop with WIN7 to a new one with WIN10. The folder permissions are not working with some of the files transferred over to the Win10 laptop. I get an error message that pops up saying I don't have permission to open the file. But if I copy it from the old laptop onto a thumb drive and open it from there, it they open just fine. Then I tried to save it the the WIN10 laptop and couldn't do that. What is going on with permissions? Could someone help?


Also, can't encrypt two folders I suspect for the same reason. Maybe they are encrypted but the folder name has just not turned green.

Folder Permissions not working on some folders

As found in this ServerFault answer, try with the following steps to change ownership and permission on many files and folders in one batch from command line:

• Open a Command Prompt "As Administrator"
• Run the following commands:

takeown /f YourDrive:\YourFolder /r /d y

icacls YourDrive:\YourFolder /grant administrators:F /T

No permissions

Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

• Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
  
• Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
• Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
  

This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
