    For mmc.exe I get "This app has been blocked for your protection"

    You can use Option 5 in the tutorial to get only the SFC results from the huge CBS log. *Wink

    That doesn't work for me. I ran the powershell version from an elevated powershell, but no sfcdetails.txt file was produced.

    Yep, no SFC details in your CBS log.

    Are you running the SFC command from within Windows, and not at boot?

    I'm running it from within Windows. What should I be doing?

    All the timestamps in the log correspond to times when sfc was scanning.

    No, it still doesn't produce anything.

    But much as I don't feel comfortable using my computer knowing there is any kind of unresolved breakage in the OS, I can still run mmc.exe from an elevated powershell, which means that all the things I need it for, such as the services manager and the device manager, are still available to me. This is the first time I have ever had a problem with Windows which the smart and helpful people at Ten Forums, such as yourself, have had so much difficulty trying to resolve. Is it time to just accept that MMC is a little bit broken and live with it?

    Not if you use installation media that is the same version and language as what you currently have installed.

    Be sure to read all of the notes and warnings at the top of the tutorial though.

    I had the same problem with the mmc.exe admin warning, this happened after I cleared out the excess windows update entries via the reset reg win update components TUT.

    I fixed this error by resetting the User Account Control setting to defalt and re booting. Then I reset UACS back to Never Notify, which is my normal setting, re booted again and everything was back to normal.

    Don't know if it will help in your case but, it might be worth a try.
