  1. Forced shutdown safe?

Although not Windows 10 fault my machine got hung up accessing a misbehaving NAS network share. Unfortunately it couldn't resolve and I couldn't restarte explorer. I then tried a shutdown via Ctrl Alt delete but it just laboured on 'restarting' but didn't do it. I left it a few minutes.

anyway long story short, I was forced to hold down power button to eventually shut machine off. I rebooted and all seems okay with the machine. I restarted the NAS (which had been troubling) and can see no ill effects but it concerns me. I use fast start so I don't think Windows hiberysys file would of appreciated the unclean shutdown - are there any side effects I should be looking out for? I think I've got away with it but certainly don't want to be shutting down the machine in this way again

i blame the Mac OS X for the mess. The NAS in question isn't great but I had been using our iMac to try and write to it and to be honest OS X and samba are not a marriage made in heaven. The whole thing stalled. Quite why I then tried to access same share on the Windows machine and cause the ruckus is beyond me but this was the catalyst for having to shutdown like this

    :)

  2. force shutdown

Try pressing & holding the power button until you see a message that tells you to swipe down the screen to turn the phone off.

Then after the phone has gone dark, press & hold the power button again to boot it back up.

    Forced shutdown safe?

No, a forced shutdown is not safe. If there were no potential ill effects of a forced shutdown the normal shutdown procedure would never have been designed. With a normal shutdown processes are allowed time to terminate themselves in an orderly way. A forced shutdown bypasses all of this and processes are forcibly terminated with no regard for their current state or what they were doing. This may result in registry entries or files not being updated properly, data corruption, or data loss. There are a large number of possible outcomes. I am not saying these things are likely, only that they are possible. It all depends on the state at the time of shutdown and you can't normally know that with sufficient detail.

  5. Thanks, its definitely left me with a feeling of unease. I'll keep an eye on the system. It seems absolutely fine. Restarted a few times to be sure.

I certainly don't want to do that again but there was nothing else I could do. Luckily nothing was open at the time over than viewing the network shares

  6. Well unlike Windows 95, Windows 10 can recover from it, mostly. It has last good known configuration, system restore and so on. I do forced system shutdown pretty often, because of games, so far so good. I do not have reset in laptop. *Rolleyes

  7. Thanks for comment. I will try and lighten up and forget about it. Sure it was one off and the system is behaving.
