Free Conversion tool from RUNNING machine to vmware VM

    Hi there

Just in case some people might want to create VM's from their physical running machines this FREE tool from the main VMware Enterprise stuff can be used on Stand alone machines.

Works fine as well --I've used it to create several VM's from running physical machines (you can carry on working while the tool builds the VM).

VMware vCenter Converter: P2V Virtual Machine Converter | VMware United Kingdom

Here's a VM (W8.1 enterprise X-64) created from my Running physical machine (Hostname Blackdog). Photoshop running on the VM - no problem.

A nice practical use for this for example is to create a W8.1 VM system of your current working machine - with all your applications installed and then from the W8.1 VM you've created you can then do an UPDATE within the VM to W10 -- saves re-installing all your applications again - great for testing too.

    Cheers

How to display different virtual desktops on different monitors

I would suggest the most useful get-around is to run VMware virtual machine and use the power of a wider desktop to run the VMware (or HyperV etc) on the 2nd monitor. You can then run the VMware software in 'unity mode' which allows you to work directly
in the application window (the one inside the VM); this is better than having to Alt + Tab to the VM environment guest and select the app window you want inside that. It's great, and Windows / VMware is a good solution. (I don't know HyperV which I believe
has similar functionality). Just make sure you have plenty of memory, as a 64 bit VMware guest VM OS will use similar RAM as a your 'host' machine.

How Can I use Windows 10 to Run a program written for Windows 98?

Sure, no problem and it's free: Run your program in a Windows 98 virtual machine.

Setting up a virtual machine with VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation player is easy - there are many tutorials on the web. Install Windows 98 in the VM and then install your program.

You can also create a VM with Microsoft's own Hyper-V but the process is more tricky to understand.

Another option. Since you're using Acronis, you can also create a VHD file from the tib file and create a vm for it.

NOTE: If your current Windows was installed using EFI then you need to edit .vmx file and add an entry: firmware="efi"

    Hi there

Thanks --that also works too - but Acronis is a PAID product -- the other is FREE.
A lot of people don't have Acronis. Actually it's quite good now - the past couple of releases were anabsolute dog but ATI 2014 and up work just fine --I find creating the bootable USB version the best - I usually take backups when I'm not working on te machines so "stand alone Bckup" is fine.

(BTW even if you DON'T have a UEFI enabled computer you can create a UEFI VM with that addition in the configuration file).

    Cheers

You can use Free Macrium to create it also. That's what I am using.
