    Frequent Bugcheck 116 (GeForce GTX 780 Ti)

    Having upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 I now get several bugchecks a day which seem to relate to my GPU (GeForce GTX 780 Ti). I had no problems with windows 7 and the problem started the same day I upgraded to Windows 10.

    Firstly the mouse pointer sticks, then the monitor screen goes blank (no signal) and I have to reset the PC to reboot (I don't actually see the BSOD)

    I have tried several nVidia drivers as recommended by nVidia support who now say it's a Windows 10 issue.

    I have used DDU to ensure a clean install of the drivers, to no avail.

    I am currently using nVidia driver 368.51 (a hotfix) and have also used the latest issued drivers and some older ones. all give exactly the same bugcheck:
    0x00000116 in ntoskrnl.exe+14f4d0 caused by dxgkrnl.sys+1411dc (always the same addresses).

    All of my hardware runs cool:
    GPU around 31C
    CPU cores all below 35C
    PSU: Corsair RM850i around 42C (the fan never kicks in) and voltages stable:
    12v = 12.1
    5v = 5.0
    3.3v = 3.30

    I do not think it can be a hardware problem because everything was fine until I upgraded to windows 10.

    I would be grateful for any help.

    TIA

    :)

    Frequent Bugcheck 116 (GeForce GTX 780 Ti)

    Hi b20feb,

    Welcome to the 10forums *Smile

    Please remove these programs while troubleshooting, if you would like to know the reasons
    Both Gigabyte & ASUS software are known for causing BSODs and possible other problems.
    Smart Defrag is from IObit, IObit is a company known for the scam programs it makes that can cause a system to become unbootable where the only solution is a clean installation.

    Thanks for the reply.
    I do not use any of those programs and they are not in StartMenu\Programs. (I do not use any defrag program - My C drive is an SSD.

    I don't understand you comment about upgrading to Windows 10 - I already upgraded to Windows 10 (Home) from Windows 7 SP1 using The WIndows Update (free upgrade) and Windows Update reports that Windows is up-to-date.

    Edit: I just checked one of my other PCs and Windows update automatically upgraded it to 1511 just a few days ago, so I assume Windows update is a bit slow upgrading the PC that has the bugcheck issue.

    It is not about using the programs nor about where they are located, it is about the presence on the system with these programs.

    There are 2 versions of Windows 10, Windows 10240 which was released july 29th 2015 and Windows 10586 which was released 15th november 2015. You have version 10240 which isn't the up to date one.

    That is why I included a tutorial for upgrading.

    With Windows Home it normally should upgrade very soon depending on when it was installed, for example if the installation was before the 15th of november it should happen a short period after the 15th.
    It may come soon, but I would recommend to do it manually *Smile

    OK, Thanks, I'll try the manual upgrade tomorrow.

    re the programs, I have uninstalled Smart Defrag (which I did not use anyway) and AI Suite 3 using the uninstall feature in Programs and Features. I cannot uninstall Smart 6 because the uninstall fails.

    Well I downlaoded the WIndows 10 1511 ISO.
    First problem I encountered is I have no 'Mount' option when I right click on the ISO, so I burned it to a DVD and ran setup.exe from there.

    2nd problem I encountered is it's not giving me the option to keep all my installed software (it's greyed out). I have way to much software to have to install it all again.
    What could be the reason it's not giving me the option?

    You should have the Mount option. That indicates some kind of problem, corruption possibly.

    Try the fix listed here, see if that works.: No option to mount .iso file : Windows10

    If not, try running sfc /scannow from a Elevated Command Prompt. See if it fixes any file corruption.

    Thank you for the Link, that resolved the missing 'mount' option for future reference. I had already run sfc /scannow *Smile .
    Now I just need to figure out how why the 1511 upgrade says the language (presumably English) doesn't match my system language (English UK).

    There are many different English langages you could install, if the system says the system language is not the same you'll need double check the language.

  15. b20feb Win User
    Yes, you are correct - the problem is I know my system language is English UK - what I don't know is what language the Upgrade is trying to use, and it doesn't offer me a choice of language. I suspect it's English US (I followed the download link in the tutorial and downloaded Win10_1511_2_English_x64.iso ).
