Windows 10: friend's laptop did a windows update last night. he is running windows 10 and has it set...

Went to bed letting the laptop update and this morning he was unable to logon - User profile service has having proboems. After a couple of restarts he managed to logon but most of his icons were missing so he called me


His system looks like it has been completely trashed.


1/ all programs previous installed except a few are gone, gone from control panel/programs. Gone from C:\program files and (x86)

2/ windows office has completely disappeared as is chrome. Its as if they never existed.

3/ control panel/programs has 3 programs in it, 2 times Dolby Audio X2 programs and microsoft one drive. EVERYTHING is is gone

4/ view installed updates show ONE update KB4508433 installed today nothing else

5/ there is a windows.old folder created today with 3 user\....temp files, the ones it creates when it cannot load your real profile. BUT WHY in windows.old

6/ windows folder has a users\mike folder with SOME - just some of his desktop icons. Maybe all the reset were application shortcuts

7/ all pst's appear safe

8/ all documents appear safe

9/ windows log only has log files for today ( and NO - they have never been deleted )


The machine is completely smashed


it is a lenovo carbon x1 laptop


I would say the update did a clean install only there are not enough programs installed even for a clean install


Plus logging in this morning failed with the user profile service error.


3 tries later and it accepted the login credentials


The user still exists on the computer - documents still points to all his documents - just every program uninstalled, with every update.

no, you can't go back..
I suggest creating a backup image of your os drive
