Windows 10: From WHS2011 to WS2016, DCont, ActiveDir & Server Essentials Experien

The title is a mouth full I know....

I read the Windows Server 2016 - Setup Local Domain Controller | Tutorials from here, and other tidbits from elsewhere.

I will say this WHS2011 ( Enhanced WS 2008 R2) did so much for you automatically. There is no Active Directory or CA to learn. But then again it is only limited to 5? Remote users. But alas it's very much out of date, my O/S drive if down to 5gb from all of the Windows updates over the years, and the Dashboard software module is broken. I could see the proverbial writing on the wall, it's time to learn something newer.

Can I use the Windows Server Essentials Experience on it's own, or do I also need to set up Active Directory, CA etc. I have a basic understanding that it too tracks users and passwords plus much more. In my puttering, from lack of finding solid information, I found myself not getting anywhere fast, and rolling back the roles to try and start clean once again.

There is such misinformation out there also. To me if you are going to take advantage of Server Essentials Experience, then use most all of the features including the Connector and Launchpad. Why keep it from auto loading and then hide a manual back-up icon in the taskbar, but what do I know?

I own copies of WHS2011 Unleashed Third Edition (Sams) which proved to be very helpful for set-up that O/S years ago. I also have Windows Server 2016 (Pearson) and Mastering Windows Server R2012 (Sybex). As you all may know, very thick books with a lot of data.

What I have not found in either the WS R2012 or WS 2016 any mention of the Server Essentials experience. Which did not see the other computers within my local domain/LAN. I tried to look up ways to fix the problems with DCOM with little success. However I did find the info on creating a static IP for the server, which I also apparently set up with WHS2011 but completely forgot I had done it....

Pulling my hair out after not comprehending this completely for almost 4 evenings.

Maybe I am getting too old for this haha.

Remove Backups Server essentials 2012R2

I would like to remove some old backups for devices listed in the windows server essentials 2012 R2 dashboard to free up hard drive space. Also would like to delete old backups from client computers no longer on the network.

What are the steps needed to accomplish this? I do not see an obvious way to do this in the devices tab of the dashboard.

I will post this in the WHS2011 forum. For clarification, my HTPC's and Surface Pro 3 are all running Windows 10 and they connect to the Windows Home Server and my NAS with no problem. I'm only having problems connecting from my desktop PC, which is running
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. When this PC was running Windows 7 64-bit I never had a problem accessing my WHS2011 or NAS.

Not sure how this is a WHS2011 issue vs Windows 10, but I'll follow your suggestion.

For what ever it's worth, there are several reports on the internet of this same issue...so it's not unique to me. Hope Microsoft can address this holistically vs. pointing folks to other forums.
