Windows 10: Frustrated! Desktop icons disappear, font settings don't hold.

I have a new Windows 10 laptop. The first thing I noticed was that the desktop icons' text was so small I could barely read it and shadowing of the fonts was making them look fuzzy, even harder to read. Therefore, I went through all the steps I could find to increase the icon font size and remove the shadowing. Had to use a non-microsoft tool to set the icon font to a custom six pt font and followed the Windows advanced settings to remove shadow from icon fonts.

However, the shadow has never been removed and after I reboot the fonts revert to the smaller 3 pt size. I even tried increasing the icon size to medium and the fonts stay the same.

My other legacy laptop's desktop looks great but I haven't been upgrading Windows 10 because I'm afraid it will die, the performance is so bad.

I am very nearsighted and the font size of the icons as well as the taskbar txt is near impossible for me to read.

I read this is an issue with the latest versions of Windows 10. At this point, I would accept a third party application that replaces the desktop entirely with a custom, easier to read version.

Also, sometimes shortcuts, such as to documents or folders, disappear entirely. My extra chrome user shortcuts are moved to the onedrive desktop, which I didn't create nor would I want to have one. Finally, there are desktop.ini transparent icons left on my desktop and I don't know what placed them there or what their purpose is.

Change the font of my desktop icons

Hi Domi,

Windows 10 make it easier for you to personalize your computer by going to the Settings app. Some options from Control Panel has been moved to the Settings app just to bring all the settings under one roof.

To change your desktop font, you may follow these steps:

• Go to Settings.
  
• Choose Personalization.
  
• Select Themes.
  
• Under Themes, select Theme settings.
  
• On the left pane, click Change desktop icons.

To change the font size of the icons on your desktop, refer to these steps:

• Right-click on your desktop.
  
• Click View.
  
• Select the font size you prefer for your desktop icon.

Desktop Icons disappeared

Hi Kinsley,

• Are you referring to the desktop icons?
• When did the icons disappear? Did you make any changes to the system Settings?

It's possible that your device is in Tablet mode. I suggest you to turn it off and check if the icons appear. To do so, select the
Action center icon on the taskbar (the little message box next to the date and time), and then select
Tablet mode to turn it on or off.
