Get up to date with the MediaCreationTool or get Anniversary Update

    Hi,
My Windows 10 Home 64-bit automatic updates work well.
My Windows version 1511, which I think is out of date. There have been many improvements.
and I want to the anniversary update which will upgrade the Window version to 1607.

However, when I downloaded and run the filename(windows10update9252.exe), which is the anniversary update file name, which will install the version number 1607

When run the 'Windows10Upgrade9252', I found this "Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant" was installed and lunched. When I checked the 'Windows 10 upgrade Assistant', I found it took about two hours and still its progress percent says 9%.(screen shot below) I think it will take ten hours to be complete. How big is the Windows update to upgrade Windows to the version number 1607. I am afraid that that update file size is 4 GB which is as big as the whole Windows 10 installation file. My Internet Speed is 512Kbps

Do you recommend I can let it complete whatever it took or I can get the "Windows 10" up to date with the Media Creation Tool( i.e. downloading another latest version of Windows 10 with Media Creation Tool)

    :)

Getting error message" Computer started using the Windows installation tool. Remove the installation media, and then restart your computer so that Windows starts normally"

    Thanks again

Unfortunately I first do that and it's OK, but when I then try to run MediaCreationTool to update in that computer Anniversary Update, I get the message.

Hi, each major build upgrade is the size of a complete Windows installation.
I recommend you download it manually. Why? Then you can create a physical boot medium, which is useful if you need it for either recovery purposes, accessing files from outside Windows avoiding permissions issues (it's one way to do it), or an in-place repair install.

Further, if you need to make more than one attempt to upgrade- or use it for more than on PC- you save downloads.

(Please don't underline text in your posts- it makes it hard to read. Thanks!)

I know it is all about terms but in the grand scheme of things and historic use of the word, going to Version 1607 is an Upgrade over Version 1511. Getting newer Builds are updates to the Version installed. The 32-bit and 64-bit Versions of Win10 are a bit different in size and 4GB+ is normal for the 64-bit version. A limiting factor of 512Kbps Internet speed is a problem, mine is 5Mbps [5000Kbps] and still takes a few hours for downloads of that size, somewhere between 2 and 4. At issue is the variability of the Internet, how many servers the signal has to go through before it gets to your computer.

    Thanks a lot,

Then, you suggest to cancel update via Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant(screen shot above): its progress now is 12% for starting of about 5 hours)
You recommend then to run the Media Creation Tool, and let it download the Windows 10 from the scratch. This might be tacking a long time since the file size will be 4GB. Also, the Media Creation Tool cannot support resuming download. So, if there is an electricity outage occurs, then I the Media Creation Tool will start downloading the Windows 10 installation files from the scratch.

    Thanks a lot,
I was told that this file name 'Windows10Upgrade9252' is newer/later than Windows10Upgrade28084. However, you told the opposite.

Hi, I use ADSL (a copper telephone wire) for internet- and downloading 3Gb or so didn't take that long.
Every major build is that much to download, so you'll need to find a way to deal with that.
The last update to build 1607 was several 100Mb - and many had problems downloading it for some reason.

If you download it once it's done. If you download it via update, that can run into problems, and if the update fails to install, you'll have to repeat it all. So for you manual update for big updates sounds good.

Hopefully you have a UPS to protect your PC (if it's a desktop) or your use your laptop battery (your specs aren't complete so I cant tell).

    Thanks a lot,
Could you please reply to my points below:
1- You recommend to download the 4GB which is just the ISO program via MS Media Creation Tool?

2- I will need to have MS Windows 10 Media Creation Tool up to date in order to download the latest version of Windows 10. Or any MS Windows 10 Media Creation Tool can download the latest version of Windows 10.

3- Since downloading the whole Windows 10 version would take a long time, and if there is an electricity outage occurs, the Media Creation Tool will be terminated, and it wouldn't support resuming download from it was. So, do you have any direct links from which my browser or any internet download managers will capture/download Windows 10? So, when my browser or my internet download manager capture the download, then it will support 'resume capability'

4- When I get the latest version of Windows 10 downloaded as ISO file, and burnt it onto a bootable DVD, using or a bootable USB. Then, I will need to do a clean install. If so, my exiting windows 10 version along with all porgrams will be overwritten.

5- My laptop battery is corrupted and I don't have any UPS?

Yes. You need the latest one to get the latest version of Windows 10. If you still have an older Media Creation Tool it will still download the old version. To check which version of the MCT you have right-click on it and select Properties, the file version on the Details tab tells you which one it is. For the Anniversary Update (1607) it should say 14393, the previous version (for 1511) said 10586.

Personally I'd use it to create a bootable medium. You could use one of the direct download links, but you'd need to be sure whatever you download is appropriate as regards language.

2- I will need to have MS Windows 10 Media Creation Tool up to date in order to download the latest version of Windows 10. Or any MS Windows 10 Media Creation Tool can download the latest version of Windows 10.

You can try using something like Free download manager - it depends if the site supports resume. Your browser may also support resume.

    A clean install wipes everything.
I'd advise deleting partitions you don't need or formatting the disk- which ever is appropriate- first.

5- My laptop battery is corrupted and I don't have any UPS?
Pray. Or go somewhere else and use a different PC for the download.

Thanks a lot, link that Published by Brink Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums was on 28 Jul 2015. So, you think that Direct Downloads of a Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft are the latest ones.( version 1607)

2- Those Direct Downloads of a Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft will support 'resume capability'.

Why do you recommend to delete partitions or formation. No need to do that at all. Even if I needed to do that, then I would delete/format the C partition on which old Windows version 1511 is being installed.

My existing Windows 10 version 1511 is being installed on C partition, so I will need to do a clean install by using the Windows 10 version 1607 which will be overwritten the windows 10 version 1511. Or I can do upgrade from Windows 10 version 1511 to version 1607. So, I will save in the time of installing and I will keep my programs installed on version 1511

You clearly don't understand what's involved in a clean install.

Several partitions are created by a Win 10 install. Not just the one in which your Windows folder etc reside. The best way is to have enough contiguous unallocated space on your disk and direct Win 10 to install there. If you leave the existing partitions in place you will end up with a mess.
