  2. Success! What I did was uninstall the "Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant" that I had previously installed by going to Settings>Apps & Features. Then I rebooted just for luck. Then I went to the Windows Downloads page (Download Windows 10) and just below where it says, "Looking to install Windows 10 on your PC?" I clicked the Download Tool Now button. Don't know why it worked, but it did!

I found the solution that worked for me.

I ran the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant Tool and after it started, I disabled my network connection (LAN or WLAN) by putting it into airplane mode. The Anniversary update then ran flawlessly! Apparently there is some conflict between Windows Update and the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant Tool that prevents the upgrade with a network connection.

I don't have wireless on my desktop so I guess i would just disconnect the cable from my router to the back of my desktop?

Yes, you could do that, or you can disable your network connection from the Control Panel.

Had the same problem last night.

In my case, there was a constant "retry" of a Defender definitions update that was apparently getting in the way.

I ended up downloading the ISO straight from Microsoft, and running that did the trick.

I have no idea what was actually causing the problem, so I just went for "Plan B". Media Creation Tool probably would have worked just as well.

  9. I didn't make the connection, but I too noticed a Defender update that kept appearing and then failing. "Plan B" works!

I did as you suggested and my laptop updated, also did the same to my desktop by pulling the cable from the back of my desktop and it is updating, so I think you have found a workable solution. Both computers updated OK, thanks for the solution.

This is pretty similar to what happened to me...the repeating Defender definitions update would have stopped without the Internet connection.

I used the MCT as well but did a complete clean install. I'm hoping that will solve some problems that still cropped up now and again such as the Start menu not responding, and the occasional network problems.

The Windows10Upgrade28084.exe failed twice for me. I suspect that something is wrong with it. One of the failures told me that my graphics card was not supported. I've been running Win for a year now on it. What worked for me was using the ISO to do an in place upgrade.

Thanks Unicore! YES. I ran the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant Tool as well. After repeated failures, disconnecting the ethernet cable worked! Microsoft needs to come out with "Anniversary Update 1607.1" with a fix for everyone.
