Getting sick of windows errors/lose files after sleep/restart...

    Hi
Ever since I installed windows 10 and I'm having those random issues after waking up from sleep / restart or shutdown. (fast startup disabled no difference)
    Those issues mainly are:
1- Files and folders disappearing despite their date creation. Mostly on secondary drives. had to do check disk and deal with the found.000 folders to recover them.
2- Hard disk/s stop working, I can see it on my computer but accessing it will just make the explorer as searching forever. I can fix this either by restarting or unplugging the power from the HDD and plug it again while windows is running and it will recognize it again.
3- Random error messages on startup, Windows security center, startup program failed to load etc..
4- Services might not startup causing my program fails to start as well.

A week ago I lost 4TB of gaming HDD folder, but thank God I was able to recover them.
Now just went and turned on my PC I found a duplicate HDD of my 2nd gaming HD with letter "K?" I restarted my PC and it took it 5 min to boot, with all the above errors shows at startup. And of course lost my 2nd gaming HDD with 2TB of games. couldn't access to internet as services didn't load, windows was slow and unresponsive, and took me 2 hours of unplugging all hard disks but main, restarting, force shut by PSU power switch waiting 30sec plugging all HDDs back and after a lot of messing turned it on, after 5 min of windows boot, it worked with some errors.

This windows is nightmare, for 2 years of using W8 never had such issue, but 6 months with this windows turned my life to hell. I'm dealing with those issues 2~3 times a month. not to mention I reinstalled windows a month ago and still same problems.

What the hell is wrong with this windows? seriously it's driving me nuts.

-Windows update is disabled since day installed.
-Windows defender is off, but getting errors message about it?
-Fast start up on/off doesn't make difference.
    -No new programs installed.
-Avast internet security, been using it since Windows 8.

Oh one more, I couldn't access to tenforums with windows IE keep crashing in it every 2min, so used chrome.

    :)

How do I get Windows 10 to stop being a piece of crap????

No matter what I do I can't get my computer to stop from randomly restarting my computer without any warning. Even worse, stupid Office 16 (specifically Word) and Windows 10 team up to wipe out lots of work that I haven't completed and haven't created
a file name at the time my computer decides to restart itself with no warning to me. Often this happens when the computer has gone into sleep mode. I'm sick of Microsoft pumping out crap products with major flaws and people suffering because there are no
suitable alternatives for businesses to use that are widely accepted across the country and can be shared among those businesses. I'm so sick of losing valuable work product to crappy Microsoft products. Uhhhhhhhhhh

    Hi black

Could you share what version and build of windows you are using?

The age old have you looked into the driver you are using for storage? Has Windows identified correctly? If it is the most recent I would recommend falling back a version or two. You listed that you have a desktop, if custom built and your MB vendor has drivers for Windows 10 that is where I would start.

You may also want to check, under Disk Drives, in device manager which policy you are using.

You might also check to ensure you have the latest BIOS for your device. As I'm sure you are aware BIOS updates come with a real risk. I'm not saying to update BIOS however checking your version from vendor's current version may provide some insight.

You mentioned fast start up is disabled, have you considered disabling hibernation as a further test point.

For your drive just to be sure please consider using the trial version of HD Tune. Scan for errors using the full scan and run a bench mark test. On HD's site under the test results tab you can compare your bench marks to theirs.

I might also run sfc /scannow. You mentioned stray error messages and services not starting.

As to Defender, are you using another AV. Yesterday I worked on a machine where Defender would not detect / accept that Malwarebytes 3.0 was installed.

    1607 Build 14393.0

Yes all drivers are identified correctly and windows 10 certified.
I didn't change those. default by windows:
    Better performance.
Enable write caching on the device.

Latest BIOS is used for the motherboard.
    Hibernation always disabled.
Already did that which took hours, all green and very good health.
But when windows acting goofy I can't complete any test, shows I/O device error.
    Done no errors found.
Using Avast latest build. restarted my windows and now Defender is off and Avast taking the roll.

The problem is, it's happening with all my secondary drives, except windows drive.
I bought new HD for expansion a month ago and gave the older one for my brother PC that I built for him and using windows 8. He never had any problem with it, unlike me.
And my new HD is acting the same as the others.

I'll check if PSU is giving enough power to Sata power connector.
    Thanks for the response Ken.

1607 Build 14393.0 That is very brave of you - running the original RTM build of Anniversary Update (the '.0' one). The first 'bug fix' patch was released within a day of the launch: August 2, 2016 — KB3176929 (OS Build 14393.10) and there were three further patches in August before September's 'Patch Tuesday'. This rather suggests some frantic bug fixing was needed. Perhaps that explains "What the hell is wrong with this windows?"

Have you considered actually updating it to the latest build? (or any build higher than .0) You can do it manually from the update catalog if you don't wish to enable your windows update.

By experience most users never trust windows update anymore.
Anyway, do you suggest downloading the specific one you listed or latest update?

Really? I think you'll find "most users" on this forum use windows update, often checking for updates manually before windows update gets round to doing it automatically. I certainly do.

The latest one will have the most up to date security fixes, so I'd go for that. Certainly nothing earlier than Cumulative Update KB4013429 and KB4013418 Windows 10 Build 14393.953 - the first to include the WannaCry worm patch.

Ok Windows updated successfully, now seems to be booting faster and loads properly.
This issue occurs once in a while, will give it little time.
    Thank you Ken and Bree.
Will report later if this issue solved or not, hopefully it does.

Getting sick of windows errors/lose files after sleep/restart...

I take that back, problem still persist, 2 days in row missed 2 drives, F and G.
I noticed it happened during copying files from G to F.
    First, lost destination drive F.
2nd time, lost source drive G.

To narrow my problem, I'm checking for possible hardware issue?
Checked PSU sata power to HDD 5v , 12v, 3.3v and earth all good and steady.
Ran HDtune benchmark for both HDDs to see if they will lose power during extensive use, transfer rate 190~212 Mb/sec. I'll run the benchmark again more.

I think of Avast internet security as well. Must be scanning while copying files, somehow blocking? The hard drive.
Because last time I lost drive during copy, the copy window froze. couldn't access the internet. Tried to open Avast UI and it's froze. however, I could access to my computer normally.

I don't know anymore it's all random. Gona try:
    - Rebuilding my PSU sata cable.
    - Disable Avast and see if there any difference.
    - Any suggestion?

Here some old threads with similar issue to mine. Sadly with no solution ):

  14. A little bit like whack a mole.

    Is reliability history reporting anything?

Can I ask what kind of HD's you are using and if Western D, the colour?

I ask as I have a WD Red, 3TB. It is my off machine backup for Windows 7. The last four months it won't take a large copy task, its just out of warranty, of course, like copy this drive to that drive without coming up with drive disconnected message. Bought a 4TB Blue, ran same copy, no issues, granted it was brand new with nothing on it. Both were low level formatted before installation.

Regarding your rig, sounds like lots of devices and you tweaked me when you said extensive use. Any chance that the drives are reacting to a heat situation? (Just asking)

Regarding power, while your PSU is reporting okay any chance the mains are experiencing voltage fluctuation, especially in Air Conditioning season. I live in a smaller town and our power use to fluctuate pretty severely, and flicker. I went with PSU between wall and PC. I know you said this started with 10 so I'm stretching.

  15. Hi,
I'm on 15063.483 now seems okay although I do not use 10 much at all.
A few more options and the blocking of the silly lock screen is working via group policy again *Smile
