Google Chrome’s media player is getting playback speed controls

Most of us tend to use YouTube and apps when it comes to streaming content on desktop, but there are instances when you’ve to rely on Chromium’s HTML-based in-built media player, which is used in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and other Chromium-based browsers.

As per the new code commits, it looks like Google is adding new playback speed controls to Chromium. This change is going to benefit all Chromium browsers, such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

Google’s new feature will allow anyone to change the playback speed for slowed-down and faster watching. Like YouTube, Chrome or Edge will allow people to reduce native playback speed all the way down to 0.25x and speed up by 2x. It’s worth noting that these playback speed options are also available on downloaded videos.

The other available controls seem pretty much the same, including the play and pause button, and picture in picture. The interface of the player remains unchanged.

    New global media controls

Last year, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge were updated with new media playback controls. As you may be aware, the feature allows you to control the media contents directly from the toolbar. It comes with simple back controls with options to pause/resume the video and close the player.

The feature was later updated with support for the song’s album art and live captions.

In Chrome 91, Google is experimenting with a new modern look for the media playback controls. As you can see in the above screenshot, Google has changed the interface of the player and enabled a new dynamic background to better support the album art (if available).

Likewise, Google has changed the position of controls. For example, the new progress bar is underneath the playback controls, which are at the top. The other options are album art, song title and URL of the player.

The new media playback control is currently available in Chrome Canary only. It’s likely that the feature will also come to Microsoft Edge. If you can’t wait, you can enable it using a command-line flag:

    --enable-features=GlobalMediaControlsModernUI

You need to add the above command in the target field of the Microsoft Edge (Canary) shortcut.

In addition to these improvements, Microsoft and Google are also working on new Progressive Web App (PWA) features for Chrome and Edge.

  2. Windows DVD Player playback speed control

Hi Larry. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Guardian Moderator here to help you.

Only built-in player that has speed adjustment is Windows Media player here:

    https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-change-playback...

If you need it on the DVD player which they forced us to buy, then you'll have to use the free VLC player which is better anyway and the most popular in the world:

Official download of VLC media player, the best Open Source player - VideoLAN

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to rate my post, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

No way to change the playback speed of media?????

I can't believe there is no way to change the playback speed of audio files in the media player. I had that with an app(core) in WM 5. I listen to tons of podcasts and I always up the speed to 120% or so. There is no way to do it on WP7!! That's
awful, even old iPods had this!

I thought about writing my own since the XNA media player control has APIs for that but then realized since there's no multi-tasking, I can't do anything else while it's playing. This really is a deal breaker...I'm gonna have to take this phone
back and forget about WP7 until a future release. Any idea when/if that will happen????
