Windows 10: Google Fi brings spam warnings and Wi-Fi calling to more phones

No matter what phone you use with Google Fi, our phone plan in the U.S., you’ll get great features—like reliable coverage, easy group plans and high speed international data coverage for the same rates you pay at home.

We’ve been working to bring the Google Fi experience to more people across the U.S., and last year we expanded Fi plans to the majority of Android devices and iPhones. Today, we’re bringing some favorite Fi features to these devices.

Spam call warnings and the ability to block specific numbers are now available on all phones compatible with Fi—including iPhone—so you don’t have to worry about unwanted calls.

Plus, we are extending our enhanced VPN network and WiFi calling to all Android phones on Fi. When you use our enhanced VPN network, all of your cellular and WiFi traffic are encrypted so you have peace of mind, knowing nobody else can see your online activity. And with WiFi calling, you can make and receive calls as long as you have a WiFi connection, even when you don’t have cellular coverage.

WI-Fi calling does not stay on

I have a T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 521 phone with OS version 8.0.10512.142 installed.

When I first start the phone, Wi-Fi call is turned on - the phone icon on the Start screen shows Wi-Fi calling, and I have a full five bars on the signal strength icon - it does not show 4G (or 3G).

However, after a few minutes, the phone icon is reading T-Mobile, meaning that the cellular connection is now the active connection, rather than Wi-Fi calling. The signal strength icon is now show 4G with less then full strength.

Shutting the phone down and restarting it does result in Wi-Fi being active, but after a short time, it reverts to the cellular connect.

I have tried the following:

Shutting down and rebooting the phone - see above for the results.

Turning the Wi-Fi connection off and back on. This does nothing - the cellular connection is still the active one.

Going to the Wi-Fi calling app (which shows Wi-Fi calling a turned on with the Wi-Fi Preferred Radio Box selected). Turning Wi-Fi Calling off, exiting the app, re-entering the app, and turning Wi-Fi calling back on. Cellular connection is still active.

Turing the Wi-Fi app off, shutting the phone off. Restarting the phone, and turning the Wi-Fi Calling app back on. Wi-Fi calling is active full a short time, then it reverts to the Cellular connection.

I don't know what else I can do at this point. Is anyone else experiencing this problem. Is there a know solution for it?

WI-Fi calling has given me a few problems...in addition to the above, it also interferes with my sending text messages, resulting in my having to shut off Wi-Fi calling (assuming it is on at that time) in order to send some text messages successfully.

Wi-Fi Alliance Celebrates 15 Years of Wi-Fi

A passion for great technology
Wi-Fi's evolution since 1999 has been marked by continued advancement and a commitment to legacy interoperability. The Wi-Fi Alliance roadmap features a number of key elements that will support the proliferation of the organization's certified technologies into a number of new segments and applications.

New frequency bands will deliver just the right kind of connection. WiGig CERTIFIED will deliver interoperable products supporting multiple-gigabit data rates for room-range connectivity in 60 GHz in 2016. Wi-Fi Alliance has also begun work to define certification programs based on 802.11ah and 802.11af, for operation below 1 GHz to support longer-range, very-low-power connectivity.

Wi-Fi will connect new types of devices to each other and the internet. With the Internet of Everything emerging as the next major wave of connected innovation, Wi-Fi's reach will extend into the smart home, connected cars, sensing and control networks, and much more. Already the technology of choice for its long-lived compatibility and robust security, advances in power management, ease of use, and common foundations for service discovery and enablement are setting the stage for massive growth of the Wi-Fi Internet of Everything.

Core Wi-Fi technologies will continue to advance. The Wi-Fi that consumers and enterprises have come to rely on every day keeps getting better. Wi-Fi Alliance members are bringing new power saving mechanisms to Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products, improving the mobility experience, and much more. An update to Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ac, the most advanced Wi-Fi available, will validate interoperability of several performance-enhancing features in late 2015.
