Windows 10: Google Meet now available to Gmail on Android and iOS

On a given day, I'm joining a dozen video callsâsome are for work and others are scheduled times to catch up with friends (virtual trivia has become a quarantine favorite!). With video calling being an integral part of our lives, we made Google Meet free and available for everyone last month, and also brought it into Gmail on the web. Today, weâre bringing Meet to Gmail on Android and iOS, so that you can easily join video meetings from your inbox.

In the coming weeks, youâll soon notice a new Meet tab on your phoneâs Gmail app where you can see upcoming meetings scheduled in Google Calendar, and easily join them with a single tap.

In the Meet tab, tap on âNew meetingâ to start a meeting instantly, get a meeting link to share, or to schedule a meeting in Calendar. If you tap on âJoin with a code,â you can join meetings shared with you by entering a meeting code.

If you donât want Meet to appear as a tab in the Gmail app, access the Settings from the hamburger menu in the top left corner of your inbox, tap on your account, scroll down and uncheck Meet.

Dark theme is coming to Gmail for Android and iOS Mobile

Quick launch summary

Earlier this year, we launched the new Gmail on mobile to help you get things done quickly, such as viewing attachments or searching for a specific email.

We’re further enhancing the Gmail experience on Android and iOS devices by introducing dark theme support. Dark theme will begin rolling out today—for details on how to configure dark mode once it’s rolled out to your device, see below.

How to enable dark theme in Gmail on Android:

To enable dark theme on Android 10:

In your Android Display system setting, set your device to dark theme—Gmail will automatically respect the system default setting.

On Pixel, when Battery Saver is enabled, Gmail will default to dark theme automatically.

Or, in Gmail go to Settings > Theme and select “Dark".

How to enable dark theme in Gmail on iOS:

For iOS 11 or 12, enable dark theme by going to Settings > Dark Theme.

To enable dark theme on iOS 13, you can:

Set your device to dark theme in iOS Settings, and Gmail, by default, will automatically respect the system default setting.

Or, in Gmail go to Settings > Theme and select “Dark”.

New user setting to hide or show Google Meet in Gmail

Quick launch summary

We previously announced the ability to start or join a Meet call in Gmail. We're now giving users the option to hide those features.

Getting started

Admins: Admins can disable Meet for their organization by turning off video calling in the Admin console. This launch adds a user-level setting.

End users: Follow the steps in the Help Center to hide or show Meet in Gmail for your account.

Rollout pace

Rapid and Scheduled Release domains: Gradual rollout (up to 15 days for feature visibility) starting on May 19, 2020

Google Voice now available to make and receive calls in Gmail

Quick launch summary

Google Voice is now available in Gmail when using Chrome or Firefox browsers on your computer. This allows you to make and receive calls without switching tabs. Google Voice in Gmail looks similar to the call panel in the Voice web application, allowing you to answer calls, make new outbound calls, and easily transfer calls.

In addition, you can now transfer calls using the Google Voice mobile and web apps. In a few simple steps, you can send a call to the appropriate person, whether that’s an intelligently-suggested contact, searching in your directory or a manually entered phone number.

Call transferring is available in Voice on Android, iOS, and the web.

Getting started

Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.

End users: These features will be available to Voice customers by default. Visit the Help Center to learn more about transferring calls or using Google Voice in Gmail.
