Windows 10: Google Photos adds new Cinematic photos and more

The holidays are always a great time to reflect on what really mattersâfor me, thatâs my family, both near and back home in Europe. With Memories in Google Photos, I'm able to relive the momentsâbig and smallâI've shared with my loved ones. Memories surfaces things like the best photos of me and my son, family vacations and holidays from previous years, and even highlights from the past few days hanging out around the house.

Over the next month, youâll start to see your Memories brought to life with Cinematic photos, updated collage designs and new features that highlight some of your favorite activities.

Relive the moment with Cinematic photos

Cinematic photos help you relive your memories in a way that feels more vivid and realisticâso you feel like youâre transported back to that moment. To do this, we use machine learning to predict an imageâs depth and produce a 3D representation of the sceneâeven if the original image doesnât include depth information from the camera. Then we animate a virtual camera for a smooth panning effectâjust like out of the movies.

Google Photos will automatically create Cinematic photos for you. Just make sure your app is updated and when oneâs ready for you, itâll show up in your recent highlights at the top of your photo grid, like this Cinematic photo of my son.

If you want to share a Cinematic photo with your friends or family so they can relive the moment too, you can send it as a video in just a few taps. Weâre still improving Cinematic photos, so let us know what you think by sharing feedback in the app.

Fresh collage designs

Earlier this month, we started rolling out updated collage designs, so you can look back on your favorite moments in a new, delightful way. In these refreshed collages, youâll see richer, artistically designed layouts populated and stylized using AI. This helps pick the right layout for a selection of photos by finding similar colors and using those to accent details like the font and background color for a more cohesive look. Two of my favorites are this Then & Now collage of my son in the same camping chair, two years apart, and this collection of hiking photos from my last trip.

New Memories for your favorite people, things and activities

Weâre also rolling out new themes for looking back. Now youâll see Memories surface photos of the most important people in your life, something Iâm especially thankful for in a year where I wonât be seeing as many of my nearest and dearest in person. And starting soon, youâll also see Memories about your favorite thingsâlike sunsetsâand activitiesâlike baking or hikingâbased on the photos you upload.

Because not all Memories are worth revisiting, you always have the control to hide specific people or time periods so they donât show up in your Memories.

As the year comes to a close, Google Photos is here to help you look back on cherished memoriesâand as 2021 begins, weâll be there to help you enjoy the new ones you make along the way.

A new, more helpful editor in Google Photos on Android

Whether it’s a daily selfie or a #throwbackthursday photo, we all want our photos to look great before we share them. For some, that might mean getting the lighting or crop just right. Or maybe it means achieving a look that perfectly reflects your own personal style. Today, we’re rolling out a new, more helpful editor in the Google Photos app on Android with smart suggestions and easy-to-use granular adjustments, so your photos look their very best.

A little help to make your photos shine

Google Photos already helps you get the most of your photos by providing helpful suggestions like brightening, rotating or archiving a picture while you're viewing it. Now, we’re building off that idea and applying it to the editor to make editing easy—with Google Photos doing most of the heavy lifting. We’ve added a new tab right in the editor that uses machine learning to give you suggestions that are tailored to the specific photo you’re editing.

These suggestions help you get stunning results in just one tap, by intelligently applying features like brightness, contrast and portrait effects. You’ll see some familiar suggestions like Enhance and Color Pop, and in the coming months, we’ll add more suggestions to Pixel devices to help your portraits, landscapes, sunsets and more really stand out. And if you want to see what changes were applied, many suggestions will show the specific edits that changed your photo, allowing you to customize further.

Granular manual controls that are easy to use

In addition to one-tap suggestions, the new editor makes it easy to find and apply granular edits, like brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth and more. With the editor’s new layout, you can quickly scroll through all your options to find the tool you need or discover new ones.

We’re also launching Portrait Light, a new editing feature coming to Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 that uses machine learning to improve the lighting on faces in portraits. To give you even more control over how your portraits look, you’ll be able to adjust the light position and brightness post-capture through the Google Photos app. You’ll also be able to add Portrait Light to regular photos not captured in Portrait mode—whether it’s a photo you just took or an important picture from the past—on Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5, with availability on more Pixel devices soon.

Google changing how Google Drive and Google Photos work together

Many of you store your photos and videos on both Google Drive and Google Photos, which keeps them safe and easy to access. We’ve heard feedback that the connection between these services is confusing, so next month, we’re making some changes to simplify the experience across Drive and Photos.

Changes to automatic sync between Google Drive and Google Photos

Starting in July, new photos and videos from Drive won’t automatically show in Photos. Similarly, new photos and videos in Photos will not be added to the Photos folder in Drive. Photos and videos you delete in Drive will not be removed from Photos. Similarly, items you delete in Photos will not be removed from Drive. This change is designed to help prevent accidental deletion of items across products.

New “Upload from Drive” feature in Google Photos

We’ve heard that many of you would like more granular control when copying photos and videos from Drive into Photos. So we’re bringing a new feature to photos.google.com called “Upload from Drive,” which lets you manually choose photos and videos from Drive, including “Shared with Me” items, to import into Photos. Once copied, these items are not connected between the two products. Since photos and videos will no longer sync across both products, items copied in Original Quality will count towards your storage quota in both Drive and Photos.

Backup and Sync for Windows and Mac will continue to work

You’ll still be able to use Backup and Sync on Windows or macOS to upload to both services in High Quality or Original Quality. As before, items uploaded in High Quality won’t count against your account storage quota, and items uploaded using Backup and Sync in Original Quality to both services will count only once towards your quota.

Your existing photos and videos will stay in Google Drive and Google Photos

Any photos or videos from Drive in Photos that you have uploaded prior to this change will remain in Photos. If you have a “Google Photos” folder in Drive, it will remain in Drive, but will no longer update automatically.

Our goal with these changes is to simplify some features that caused confusion for our users, based on feedback and our own research. We’ll continue to look for more ways to help support Drive and Photos users going forward.

Starting on July 10, 2019, Google Photos will no longer sync to Google Drive. From that date forward, if you add or delete files in Photos, they won’t be automatically added or deleted in Drive.

We heard feedback that users were confused by the connection between Photos and Drive. We’re hoping this simplified experience is easier for users to understand and navigate.

How to get started

End users: Starting July 10, G Suite users will need to manually download items from Photos and upload them to Drive. If they delete files in Photos, they’ll need to manually delete them in Drive as well.

Additional details

Currently, G Suite users can choose to sync Photos to Drive. This means that when they upload a file to Photos, it’s automatically uploaded to the Google Photos folder in Drive. Once these changes go into effect, this folder will stop receiving updates. It won’t go away; it will just stop syncing with Photos.

Unlike consumers, G Suite users do not have the option to show photos from My Drive in Google Photos. If Google Photos is disabled in your organization, your users will not be impacted.
