gpedit.msc lost access to all the group policy configurations 2vVWvoZIy54W_qL46wy-QKIxB-zh83TFSebEDEgHGbg.jpg

I enabled Group Policy Editor on my Windows 10 Home following this tutorial in order to let myself create symlinks without Admin. It worked well at beginning. But later after some recent updates gpedit.msc suddenly cannot read any of the group policy configuration files.

The error message in the foreground reads: Cannot find proper resource file for file \"C:\WINDOWS\PolicyDefinitions***.admx\" (Error =2): the system cannot find the given file\". After closing the window the same error message will show again and again for all admx files. The only way to close it is to kill mmc.exe (Microsoft Management Console) from task manager. The upper right part of the window in background says: there's no element here.

After renaming "PolicyDefinitions" folder to "PolicyDefinitions.old" and copying that folder from my workplace computer, gpedit.msc can be opened without error message. However now the permission of the files are now wrong: the admx files in the original folder belong to TrustedInstaller (Administrator has read only access), but the copied versions belong to Administrator. Those files are supposed to belong to TrustedInstaller -- I checked the files on my workplace computer and they all belong to TrustedInstaller, while with Admin permission I can open gpedit.msc without error. Nor does the problem lie on the files themselves -- I compared the files of both version with WinMerge, and they are identical. So I guess this is probably a bug. The policy are, however, still readable and implemented.

I can't set a slideshow in the Lock Screen and one of the Microsoft suggestions to use gpedit msc didn't work

I can't set up a slideshow for the lock screen. I can select a picture from the computer or I can select one of the Windows 10 standard pictures. If I select slideshow it doesn't change the PREVIEW and when the computer is inactive I get a black screen.

One of the suggestions made by Microsoft in response to this problem in another post was to run gpedit msc. I have tried this or gpedit.msc or gpedit and in all cases the message I get is gpedit or gpedit.msc or gpedit msc "is not recognised as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

How do I fix the lock screen problem or invoke the local group policy editor?

how do i get gpedit for windows 10

    Here are two options:

    • Upgrade Windows to at least the professional version.
    • Use the backdoor method described
      here
. Whether it will survive an Automatic Update I do not know.
