Windows 10: Group Policy missing

Hi, I was trying to disable Windows Defender (caused a BSOD which caused an update failure), and tried to run gpedit.msc. It didn't exist. I tried using CMD to install it, failed to install. Apparently the files are missing from system32 and are now in syswow64. Is it safe to copy the files back into system32 without breaking my computer?

You can change Group Policies by opening Group Policy Editor first. You can open it by following these steps:

• Log in an administrator account. If you are already logged in as an administrator, proceed to step 2.
  
• Press Windows + R to open Run.
• Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
  

After opening Group Policy Editor, you can now make the necessary changes that you want.

Missing item from Group Policy

To resolve this issue, re-register the appropriate MMC snap-in DLL that implements the missing functionality by issuing the following command at a Windows command prompt

regsvr32 <snap-in DLL name>

By default, all of the Group Policy related MMC snap-in DLLs can be found in %systemroot%\system32

The following lists the default Group Policy snap-in DLLs that you can re-register:

Administrative Templates and Scripts: gptext.dll

Press Windows key + R

Type regsvr32 gptext.dll

Hit Enter

Restart
