Hacking tools were stolen from NSA - Almost all Windows affected

    Hi there

Always some snivelling company trying to exploit misfortunes by others.

I'd have thought what a great idea it would be to allow users say a 2 - 5 day period FREE to undo the problem -- then people could buy the product if they wanted to.

I think I'd rather put my trust in Ms fixing the problem rather than 3rd party companies as it's Ms OS in the first place and they'd take MORE time to debug the OS than Ms's people.

Conspiracy theories abound --it was a company deliberately planting this stuff so it could justify selling "Protection" or even Govts themselves so taxpayers could be persuaded to pony up a load more USD/GBP/EUR/RUB etc etc to pay for better I.T systems - in spite of enough evidence to show that almost ANY GOVT I.T project on the planet usually is highly over budget, and if it works at all only does a tiny bit of what it was supposed to do.

    Cheers

not sure why your animosity to MWB? It was in a newsletter to me because I already have MWB Premium. Also, all over the media are reports of NHS computers shutting down in todays attack. Comfirmed by the way by various Health authorities. Trusting MS to fix a problem is not always the answer, look at how many times they have to 'fix' windows with security updates etc.

@jimbo45 Malwarebytes does offer a free 30? day premium trial to those who are worried about this particular pandemic - obviously if you have already used the trial to use the "free" subset of functions then you cannot use another Trial, (this is not a malwarebytes thing all trials tend to be this way). I am personally still in a Huff with malwarebytes (I am still licenced until the end of the year for Pro, but do not trust the product any more after the problems with Version 3)

However the pandemic may be on the way to being over as the original code required trigger access to a web address, which has now been registered by an anti Malware professional and this seems to have hit the infection pretty hard,

There is already protection for all fully patched Windows operating systems, (not XP obviously as this is out of support. I also worry about those Windows 7 stalwarts who are "paranoid" about updates and may not have full protection in place

    @Barman58

    Thanks for the explanation

BTW if Swansea win their game they should be safe -- they should be able to beat Sunderland !!!!

I'm waiting to see though if anybody will try a "Class action Lawsuit" against the NSA -- would be interesting.

I hope though the UK NHS doesn't go BONKERS against lower level I.T staff who aren't the people responsible for this -- and from a few colleagues I know who work in the DVLA in Swansea - trying to get even an emergency fix on some of those public service computers is nothing but an exercise in frustration. Can take DAYS or even Weeks before it passes all the change controls --mind you the DVLA doesn't seem to have been hacked (yet).

The management (I.e the CEO's) at the top of these organisations who are usually GROSSLY OVERPAID should carry the can here -- but I don't suppose any of them will suffer any punishment whatsoever. They won't even get Fired / Sacked. The worst that *Might Happen* is that they will be asked to resign -- no doubt on HUGE pensions etc etc. -- Who needs the Freemasons !!!!!.

    Cheers

    Oh, Shivisky!!!

My daughter got what she said was Ransomware yesterday on her Lenovo Lappy with an earlier RTM of Windows 10! I don't think she's on the Creative Update yet.

She says she was supposed to call an 800 number to unlock it. It came in on Edge!

She said Edge opens your last page and that Ransomware takes advantage of that. She said, "You have to trick it with a new search in Cortana to open a fresh page and then delete everything in cache. Then a full scan to get its roots."

I'm not completely sure it was Ransomware, but conversely, the Lappy is used for a franchise they own, so . . .

Regarding Edge and the start page. You can set it to empty, new tab etc., like in any other browser. I'm not a fan of last page, either...

If it holds your computer hostage, it's a form of ransomware - whether it encrypts or not.
The answer is to disconnect from the internet, use Task Manager to kill the browser process, and run Ccleaner on the browsers, clearing out everything.

Just read a report showing the differences between the English NHS system that was compromised and the Welsh NHS which was not.

The Welsh system had recently been hardened and was fully patched. One of its automatic protections was to reject all and any email originating from NHS England *Wink
