  1. Hard Disk Slow all of a sudden! Extreme FPS Drops

So basically my hard disk was fine up until yesterday, today when i booted up my pc it took longer than it usually does and it was also feeling super sluggish. I didnt give it much attention then, but i realized something was extremely long when i launched apex legends.

First of all, it took way too long to load. And then it was lagging at the home screen. I tried getting into a match and it was just unplayable. My fps kept dropping from 100 to 5 every 2-3 seconds. That has never been the case up until today. Then I realized something was wrong with my PC. So I tried running csgo, and the condition was kind of the same there too, but not as worse. It was stuttery as hell, but fps drops werent as frequent as apex. It was dropping to around 30 fps from 150 every 10 seconds (which is still unplayable).

When I tried a few other games i found the same issue with different intensities. It was after that when I checked my Disk usage just to find out it was sitting at 70-80% even at idle state. I opened the windows defragger and analyzed my drives. I was shocked to see each of them at 15-25% fragmented state, cuz i manually defrag them at the end of every month (I have the automatic weekly defragmentation turned off).

So naturally I defragged all the drives, and it took around 2 hours which is usually not the case. I was hoping the issue to be fixed after this defragmentation but, but the issues still persisted. Tho valorant for some reason ran a lot better after the defragmentation for some reason, with only a few stutters at the start of a game. The game which ran the worse was apex, maybe cuz it uses a lot of disk while playing(50-60 Megabits/sec). Opening and closing files/windows is a lot better after the defragmentation.

So all I wanted to know is what has caused this to happen and what are the possible fixes.

    Thanks!

    Sudden FPS drop/Stutter

Since 2 days ago, I just turned on my Computer, and it starting having issues while I was playing Witcher 3 (starts with decent fpsm and then very low fps, dropping to 35, then 20, and stopping at 12 or so, in a matter of seconds, in a matter of 1min of starting the game), also stuttering without any high demanding programs, randomly. I was playing at 45-60 fps, without any stutters or sudden fps drop. Have tried other games the issue persists. Even setup everything to low settings.
I have ran several tests with several tools, all seems normal, no sudden memory spikes, or temperature raising out of the ordinary, nothing that would indicate such an fps drop or stuttering.

    MSI Afterburner

I also did the reset option on Windows10, completly cleaned out all my personal info from the windows partition.
So at this point, I am not sure if it is a software issue or a hardware issue.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Edit: I kept doing some tests to find out the issue. And this happened before and I was able to replicate it. Same thing happened as before, till I set it up to fullscreen, Alt+Tab from the game and then back to the game, FPS went up to 50 again, stable and good, dropped after a couple of seconds. After a bit it went to 2-5 fps, and I had to shutdown the game, because even the sound was getting messed up.

    MSI Afterburner 2

In this image those ups and downs in the GPU usage are when the fps dropped really hard and the sound got messed up.

    Hard disk suddenly extremely slow

I will assume you mean that you are talking about your new 1TB Seagate.

My workday involves plugging hard drives into workstations for data destruction. Often, I come across hard drives that have the following problems that do not raise any errors from S.M.A.R.T. tests:

    1. Very slow random write speed. This could be due to internal resistance on the spinning platters or resistance on the read/write head. Read speed is about 20% percent faster than the random write speed on a normal hard drive.
    2. Very loud metal scratching sound coming from the hard drive. I have had hard drives pass S.M.A.R.T. tests that sound like a car is dragging a metal body panel behind it.

    Possible cause:

    • Shock to your hard drive. Did you or a mail service drop it or accidently hit the drive on something? This could cause the drive to degrade rapidly.

    Check:

    • Check for programs making frequent read/write requests to the disk in activity monitor. Make sure no unwanted programs are tying up your disk in the background.
    • If activity monitor looks OK, check how long it takes to transfer a large file to the disk. It should be close to the drive's advertised write speed (this may be affected by how the drive is connected i.e. USB 3.0 versus SATA).

If your disk is unable to write close to its advertised speed (or the maximum speed of the connection type) with few interruptions from other programs, it may just be faulty or damaged.

    Update:

Just came across this possible solution

Sudden FPS Drops on Windows 10

So I have had this Dell G7 15 Gaming laptop for about 4 months and have been playing games on it since the start. About 1 month ago I started encountering sudden FPS drops on one of my games and ignored at first. But the problem was very consistent I would
face FPS drops about every 5 mins with frame rates sometimes dropping to as low as 10 for a time period of about 15 seconds.

At first, I thought this was a problem I was facing while playing only 1 game but soon I realized that the problem is not with the game but with windows itself since I'm facing the same problem on every game.

I tried many solutions including updating my driver, reinstalling my driver, reinstalling my game, lowering my graphics setting and changing my Registry settings however nothing is able to solve this problem and now my game would not even go beyond 40 FPS
while it was running on 120 about a month ago with no problems.

I'm considering resetting my laptop in hopes of going back to my previous setting with this being my last option before I do so. Please help.
