  2. Unable to create simple volume on new 1TB hard drive

Just got a brand new HP computer with windows 10 Pro (64bit) preinstalled on an SSD. I am now adding a 1TB sata hard drive for storing data files. New HDD is installed as Disk 1 and is seen by Windows 10. I initialized it as an MBR basic disc. When I try to go to the next step of creating a volume, I right click on disk 1 and there is no option available to create a new simple volume. There are other volume options (mirror, raid, etc) but they are all greyed out. Simple is not even listed as an option. I went to DISKPART and using clean command, took it back to the start, then initialized it as a GBT. That didn't make a difference. Now I'm back to MBR again. I also did a List Volume command under DISKPART and confirmed there is no volume on this drive. I'm stuck. How can I get this drive to the point where I can format it and use it?
    Thanks!

  3. second hard drive

Since the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter didn't work, the next step that we need to perform is to create and format the hard drive partition. Follow the steps below on how to create and format a new hard drive:

    • Right-click the Start button and select Control Panel.
    • Go to System and Security and then click on Administrative Tools.
    • Double-click Computer Management.
    • In the left pane, under Storage, select Disk Management.
    • Right-click an unallocated region on your hard drive and select New Simple Volume.
    • Click Next in the New Simple Volume Wizard.
    • Enter your preferred volume size to create in megabytes or accept the maximum default size and then click
      Next.
    • Accept the default drive letter or choose a different drive letter to identify the partition and then click
      Next.
    • In the Format Partition dialog box, perform one of the following: Select
Next to format the volume with the default settings
      or
Select Do not format this volume and then click Next if you don't want to format the volume right now
      .
    • After reviewing your choices, click Finish.

Note: Make sure that you're logged in as an administrator before creating and formatting a new partition. When you create new partitions on a basic disk, the first three will be formatted as primary partitions. Beginning with the fourth, each one will
be configured as a logical drive within an extended partition.

Update us with the outcome so we can provide further assistance.

  4. Hard drive formatted accidentally and now won’t make simple volume

Windows 10 won't recognize Toshiba 3.0 usb external hard drive. Help please.

    Hi,

Thanks for sharing your concern on Microsoft Community.

To assist you better, I like to know; have you tried formation the USB hard drive by
right clicking on the hard drive and select Format?

If you are unable to format the USB through above mentioned steps, then I suggest you to try formation the hard drive using diskpart command and check if it helps.

    Follow the below steps.

    1) Press Windows key + r, type cmd and hit
    Enter
    .

    2) Type diskpart, hit Enter.

    3) Type List volume. (List of available drives will get listed).

    4) Select Volume (#), #- number of the volume, which assigned to hard drive.

    5) Type Format recommended. (It will start formatting your hard drive)

Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.
