Windows 10: Has anyone decided to go back to 7 or 8.1?

Discus and support Has anyone decided to go back to 7 or 8.1? in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; Wow I'm really glad to see people discussing about this. See my gaming rig has 10 on it and I have been fine with it mostly, but I too have a love... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by Redbatman, Oct 21, 2017.

Only major releases like AU and CU have relatively large changes so it's only once a year. Biannual ones are more of corrections and other fixes like security related ones. Some people like me for instance, crave for even more and are enrolled in Insiders program. If you look around this forum, we get bored even few days after a new insider build is released.

No comment needed, that sums it up.

Yep, it does, doesn't it. Unfortunately, some of us use computers as tools to assist them with the work they do for a living, and have no interest nor time toying around with them.

As an aside, I am stunned at those stories of people doing clean installs as a matter of course. With the kind of software environment I need, setting up a machine from scratch, installing and configuring all the pieces of software I need and use on a daily basis requires a very significant investment of time. There is absolutely no way for me to justify that kind of effort, none at all.
Sure, if all you do is play games and browse the web, and perhaps fire up good-old MS Word from time to time you don't care. Like I said, some of us have slightly more complex work environments than that.

    That's about it.

I moved to 8 as soon as first test versions became available. After a week or so I decided 7 is not needed anymore. Stayed in 8 & 8.1 until first W10 Tech Preview was released, upgraded all machines to Windows 10 October 1st 2014. Since that I've only run 7, 8 & 8.1 on virtual machines to be able to still reply to posts on our sister sites SevenForums.com and EightForums.com, other than that I'm only running Windows 10.

No reason to go back, W10 being a well working OS.

On another note, it's interesting to see (based on reading issue threads) how those mostly complaining about W10 are those tinkering / tweaking it most. Quite a many issues could be prevented simply by letting W10 do its job without any third party optimizers / tweakers / cleaners.

    +1

What are you expecting? That each and every new build is completely new with bunch of new features, new GUI, new everything?

Personally, I like the way Microsoft is doing it: not too much new. Because they need to remain sure that a new build will work as well as possible, the builds contain not too much changes. Step by step.

My thoughts exactly - there's quite enough flexibility to customise the look and feel within settings/control panel/start menu options to personalise this machine to my tastes. Step outside Microsoft's boundaries and something's going to break - maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but a few major updates later a long-forgotten 'tweak' is going to break the system.

Anyway, that's my explanation for trouble-free consecutive upgrades of this machine from OEM Win7 through 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703 and now 1709.

Honestly your posts seem more antagonistic than constructive. This to me sums up your attitude....

If Windows is so disdainful, and Macs better suited for your "more complex work environments", why are you here... other than to be antagonistic?

Part of the problem is you have too many so-called experts that swear by these tweaks of yesteryear. Couple that with many users who have no idea how said tweak may affect their systems; they just do it because Johnny on the internet said so. Never mind Johnny is still running XP while others are on newer OS's.

Ok so as an IT Pro you have no time to “toy around with them”. What’s your beef other than Windows is changing at a faster pace making it difficult to keep up learning new tech to do your job? From what I read looks to me like MS made your job easier with the IT tech tools they’ve introduced.

Now retired, I used Windows for years to run a building contracting business. I wish I had these W10 tech features back then and now with/across multiple devices. Devices that are much easier to set up. Managing, navigating, and performing tasks is a cinch on these systems today.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the stability of my W10 systems here. Kari and others just covered why users have problems with systems. 3rd party maintenance crap apps and configuring their systems into oblivion. That's their prerogative, of course. Certainly you’re going to read more about problems here with tech enthusiasts/hobbyists. Sometimes I think they like to mess up their systems just to spend time fixing them. When they’re really advanced they use a mirror to quickly recover.

You make it sound like you have the most complex job on the planet. I’ll respect your position to use a system to perform your job, but I don’t think you have any idea what it’s like performing/managing business on one. I feel you ought to have more respect with the comments you make. Besides that, there are members here that were developing, testing, and using tech while you were still in diapers.

To end > I have a Vista era Acer T690 sitting next to me that started out using 65-70% of 2GBs of mem a week ago after installing W10 that is now only using 35-40% mem because of MS's compatibility process working things out. Amazing tech.

I never used words as colorful but meaninglessly vague as "disdainful".
And I have no idea if Macs are better suited, but I'll give them a try now that Windows has gone downhill so much.

I'm not an IT Pro, and haven't done any IT work per se in decades.

As a matter of fact I do, along with countless other executives just like me.

I will just note that you have no basis for any of the assumptions you are making above and leave it at that.

I don't consider myself as an expert but I tinker with system to some extent but can also get myself out of trouble because I note what I was doing and than it's easier to fix or reverse. If nothing helps, heck, there's always MR and full backup. This is only third time I did a clean install since first ever evaluation build. Some testing I do in VM but as most of my tinkering is about HW direct approach is required so VM is out. One things I'm not using are those snake oil "optimizer cleaners, fix-em-uppers and speedup " programs. Driver finders/updaters are also out of question. In other words, if something goes south, I want it to be my fault so I learn and not spend days to find out what/who else did what.
Internet is also fast and there's incredible amount of data to be found, just gotta look around and there's answer to most questions.

So, then we’ll keep in mind that you have had at least a high interest in IT tech or it’s a part of your management duties to know a little about it. At least you can distinguish a PC from a Mac. Or by means of that comment just made to sygnus21, can you?

I see. You really like to flaunt that position, eh. Well, I’m here to tell you that you sit on a toilet daily performing some paperwork and will end up in an ornamental box or an urn sooner or later just as the rest of us.

As a matter of fact, much basis by the statements you’ve been making leading us to believe that you do. Not too many commoners would know….

...or other statements you've made. So, therefore, I’ll also assume you manage IT department or at the very least oversee one as an executive.

Finally, you must be too young to retire, so my statement about age stands as is.

    Good day to you, sir.

Look, I really had no intention of disturbing your mental peace. If you're happy with Windows 10 that's certainly all that matters to you, and I have absolutely no problem with that. I'll skip the unproductive bickering if you don't mind.

And a good day to you, too, M'lord.

    Hi,

In a business oriented environment I can understand companies and OEMs alike stick with an OS such as W7. I probably would as well.
But, those that run it "side by side" will tell you that W10 is the faster OS.

    Time being money......

    Cheers, *Wink

I think some companies still use Windows 98 or worse MSDOS.
