Please be advised there is some risk when updating BIOS, that is why I asked to check and not jump in.

When doing a BIOS update it is important to follow directions carefully. You want to ensure there will be no power interruptions which isn't as much of an issue on a laptop as you have your battery, be plugged in with battery charged.

Do not get impatient and power cycle or do any other thing to disrupt. It doesn't happen often but it can happen that a BIOS update will "Brick" your machine. It means just like it sounds, it is dead. I've never had one brick and I've flashed lots. That said understand it can happen.

If this is just your battery and you buy a new one then maybe you don't need to flash BIOS. That said they, Asus, put it out there for a reason, wish they would explain better what each version fixes.

Where I was going asking you if you made changes to BIOS, it might be prudent to enter your BIOS and load the defaults and save. You will have to reset date and time. Updating the BIOS will have the same effect, it will be loaded as defaults. If you load defaults it could clear any potential glitches and it is relatively a simple thing to do with moderate risk. I would suggest you see what each panel has a current settings. Use your phone to record in pictures.

    Good luck. Ken

Followed this to the letter except #2 The computer shuts down automatically after #1
The computer battery icon says 88% available,CHARGING !
The ACPI-compliant control method battery driver has re-installed. This happened before but I had not gone through all the steps as you described. I'm going to leave it as it while I go out for a doctor appointment.
Question: what affect could the the message in #41 " PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer" have on this issue? that msg came from running a PowerCfg Energy report from this computer?

Have you checked Device Manager for any other/unknown devices and yellow exclamations. You might get lucky and it's just a driver that needs updating, but it appears a BIOS update is needed .... so please heed Ken's advice/warning *Smile

Note: Make sure you show Hidden Devices in Device Manager (View > Show Hidden Devices)

Have problem running on battery since upgrade to 1703

Have checked Device Manager and there are no yellow exclamations (including unhiding). I wish it would be just a driver. I have reset all the power settings/notifications to default. Also trying to research that disabled Active-State Power Management (ASPM) as reported in the energy report. My research on this disabled ASPM seems to point mostly to gaming computers plus, this is a gaming computer which used to run NVidia drivers for it's display, but those were replaced when Win 10 was first installed 2+ years ago, not by m,e but MS install, could these last two have any affect on the issue today? (ps..remind me to buy only a plain simple computer next time, looks nice is not a reason)

    Thanks all for your help,

This is a log collector that we use in the bsod forum. It will collect msinfo32, mini dumps, dxdiag, event viewer, etc.
Run the DM log collector to collect all of the files so that they can be troubleshooted.

    I read the whole thing you wrote, all good points except for the above- still as of now, I don't have a working battery;
when I did the process described by Eagle51, the battery showed at 88%, charging- now as I write this, it is still at 88%
NOT CHARGING, and if I pull the plug, the computer dies. So no BIOS update until I get a new battery. You ever hear of
internet battery company BattPit - ships from Canada?

There were no reported incompatibility issues in the event logs.

    There were 5 unexpected crashes.
    None were bsod.

what do they mean? Any significance to the upgrade to 1703/09 and battery issue?

  10. Sorry no. I know way back I ordered one for a supplier in Montreal, which shipped from overseas, and it last 9 months.

The most recent battery I bought I bought from Interstate Batteries.

In our forum we typically fix more critical event viewer problems. All of the above we don't ordinarily fix.
    Event Message:
TDI (Transport Driver Interface) free guide
Again the event viewer was generally clean and no significant battery issues or incompatibility issues were found using the find feature.

So I researched some more by going to Staples got reference from them, but appalled that both Battery Depot and BattPit have horrible customer satisfaction numbers Went to the Mississauga repair dealer, but his supplier couldn't get me the battery so I ended up buying a "used-but-like-new" battery from amazon.ca. In worst case I can return it.

So I'm going to wait for delivery, if it works I'll upgrade BIOS. I'll leave this post until a solution is found, or the computer gets dumped in the garbage. Frustrated that this ASUS is turning out worse than my last two (Toshiba, Dell)
thanks again for all your help.

May have solved this one, finally. After all the different attempts to find the cause and/or solution, I finally ordered a new battery (more on this below). When I got it today, I installed it- it showed approx 60% charged when installed - and let it charge. Took at least 2 hours to get to 100% BUT it did get to 100%. I then followed instructions to recalibrate on this site, and that is currently where it lies. Laptopt works on the battery, it is on battery as I type this, has gone into hibernation a few times, but is still working. I will mark it solved after I have re-charged it again.
About the battery- difficult to get recommendations on where to buy but I tried 3: Amazon .ca, since I live here, Battery Depot, think that's USA, and BattPit, which ships from Canada but may cover USA as well. I looked at customer ratings for the last two, and sad to say they were not very good. I checked Amazon.ca,
found one battery in their "used" section- $60 for a battery of $79 list, no shipping for a total savings of more than $30 Cdn. It shipped in two days.
This is the second time I have purchased a used product from Amazon- last summer it was a Camp Chef
camping stove at a savings of $150 on a list of over $400. That one arrived with a slightly damaged box no damage to the stove, the battery arrived in a new box with the battery in a sealed plastic bag.
I will confirm closing this item after I have finished the calibration.
Thanks to all who have helped, I will post thumbs up again, if I can.
    from Mississauga, ON.
