If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
Take a camera snap of the memtest86+ window before closing the program. Let us see it.

Had a few crashes over the past few days (even crashed while typing this out) and is really doing my head in. I've ordered a set of corsair 8 gig sticks clocked at a lower speed than the Hyper X sticks I've got which may fix my problem.

A few versatile crashes without pointing anything specific. Again a strong indicator of memory mishap.

Can you update the BIOS to the latest stable (not BETA) build?
Check the Rev version (3.0 or 3.1) of your board in the box, and get the right BIOS update file.
