HDD starts being used by windows instead of my SSD after hibernation

I didn't set anything, windows is managing it, it's that size probably because I have 16 GB of RAM. Unfortunantely i have moved everything i can to the HDD. My windows version is 1709 (OS Build 16299.64). I'll fill it out as soon as possible *Smile

In your OP, you say "i have a lot stuff opened so it's really helpful to put the pc into this mode". Could you try going into hibernation with everything closed instead and see if the HDD activity fires up again?

It does not matter what port they are on. What matters is why does the drive that you do not want to boot up, has Windows, along with the other one. Sounds like you may have to go deeper on this mystery.

I'm taking your word literally that you don't have Windows installed on D: and looking, so far, at the possibility that the page file on D: MAY have something to do with what you perceive as Windows activities.

Short of trying the suggestion I made earlier on hibernating with nothing running, let us know your current Windows version (using "winver") ASAP as this could explain, depending on how recently you updated, some extra HDD activity (although not clear why that would be the HDD doing it).

Nonetheless, another thing to do would be to show us a screenshot of "Performance" tab of your Task Manager, illustrating the high disk drive activity and the Processes tab in Task Manager sorted first by higher disk%, then by higher CPU%. - All 3 of these, of course, taken while the high HDD activity is going on.

Ah, so you did, and I apologize for missing it. Will be looking to see what else you can show on processes running.

    My thoughts.

Because you have pagefile on 'D' when coming out of hibernation it's using pagefile to go back to the same place it was (D-page file).

I believe if you put pagefile back on 'C' things would be normal.

I haven't tested this method because I have always left pagefile on the Windows 'C' partition.

Having only 9% free space on your 'C' partition could also cause problems.
Windows 10 needs 10% or even 15% elbow room to work properly.

  9. Using Sleep rather than Hibernation is a much quicker solution and Hibernation requires loading data back in memory. If the pagefile is on the HD it will also slow the process down.

But why did Windows put the pagefile in D, because i have low disk space in C?

Could well be since you say you let Windows manage it entirely.

Is the large amount of space occupied on C due mainly to a lot of or some particularly large programs (thus not seeming moveable to D: ) or is a large bit of it data?

You really should consider relieving that congestion on C: drive (per my prior and Layback Bear's suggestion) even if your weren't having the D: drive activity problem, it's really rather tight at 91% full.

If you aren't able to conveniently breakdown what's occupying the most space on C: drive, here's a link to a freeware utility called Wiztree that many here use and can make tracking down that usage by folder and sub-folder very easy: http://antibody-software.com/web/sof...ur-hard-drive/

It's hard to release any more space, i have unreal engine 4 installation and my project there (and i need them to be in the SSD to really benefit from the speed so it doesn't compromise my workflow). I'll try to use windirstat to see if i can release some space.

Might want to check your system restore allocation/usage if you haven't already done so. Of course, this is all further down the path of being able to have page file on C: drive and presumes that is the root of your problem - not sure we have that 100% at this point.

BTW - @xlar8or , since you took the Fall Creator's Update over the last month or so, have you done a Disk Cleanup (system files option) to clean out Windows.old (assuming you don't need to roll back) and tidy up any other unneeded files from C: drive? Windows.old could be taking up a goodly chunk of space if it's still there.

  14. If you need more space on your ssd you have a few choices.

    1. Remove data you don't use often to another drive.
    2. Turn off hibernation.
    3. Get a bigger ssd
    4. Less space used for Restore points.

I did Disk cleanup, it just cleaned 6.55 MB HDD starts being used by windows instead of my SSD after hibernation :p I don't have a Windows.old folder (even with show system files option enabled).
