Windows 10: HDMI problems with latest Windows 10 build

I have a basic Dell laptop Inspiron 3543 with an Intel HD Graphics chipset that is only used intermittently to operate a projector during periodic retreats in a prison ministry. The laptop was going to be used this past weekend and hadn't been used since October, so I got it out ahead of time and did a Windows Update and to make sure Office 365 was checked in. However, on the weekend, the HDMI port was completely dead. No signal to the projector, couldn't even find the HDMI port under display settings. I found from Device Manager that a generic video driver had been installed Video Controller VGA compatible and it had a yellow triangle caution symbol associated with it. First I tried to update the video driver. Windows found the correct driver Intel HD Graphics 5500 but the installation failed with the message "Found drivers for device but encountered an error..." Then I tried just deleting the offending driver, but on restart it had reinstalled itself. Downloaded the correct driver from the Dell website, but the installation failed there as well. The scan from the Intel website indicated that the correct driver was already installed! Mind you, I did most of these things multiple times in slightly different ways without success. I also tried to use System Restore, but found I did not have a restore point prior to the recent update.


Finally went back to Windows Update and reluctantly rolled back the whole Windows Installation to the previous build. And voila, the HDMI port now works and the correct drivers are installed!


So there are obviously some issues with the "new" Windows 10 build, issues I did not see when installing the update on my desktop or personal laptop. I guess I don't need any more advice, but do want this information to go to the release team to get them fixed.

Hdmi sound not working

One possible reason why the HDMI sound does not work is due to the conflicts with the playback settings. For us to help you make the HDMI sound to work, we suggest that you answer the following questions for further research:

• Have you made any recent changes to your computer?
• What is the current build and version of your Windows 10?
• Have you tried to download and install the most updated sound and display driver of your computer?

Meanwhile, we suggest that you perform the steps on this
article as our initial troubleshooting and see if there will be any changes on the HDMI sound.

What is the latest stable build of Win10 ?

If your not willing to run the latest V1803 build then I'd suggest sticking to v1709 from here Windows 10 Fall Creators Update 1709 Download • Windows ISO pick the one most applicable to you
