  1. HDMI Switches - Video card issue

Hoping someone can help me here.

Status Quo - I have a Dell 9200 running Windows 10, with an AMD HD5670 video card with Aug 2015 Windows 10 drivers. Its connected to an HDMI projector (older Sanyo, 720P), and a legacy VGA monitor. The multiple display setting work fine. The PC is primarily there to run KODI.

The goal.... the projector only has one HDMI port, I would ideally want to have an HDMI switch to accommodate:
    - the PC (now connected directly to the projector)
    - a blu ray player ( now disconnected !)
    - cable box ( now connect via component video cables)

I know in the past HDMI switches were problematic, so I sought out a relatively new one with decent specs: 4K 4-Port HDMI Switch with Remote . I thought for sure would do the trick, but its, ahem, problematic.*Sad

ISSUE: As soon as I connect the PC to the switch with switch, the video card essentially turns off. I get nothing, not even at the VGA port. Also tried removing the VGA monitor completely.

I know the HDMI port on the video card, as that what I am using now.
I know the switch-to-projector works as I can switch other non-pc devices through it.

    Questions
-Is there a particular video card setting I need to look into?
-Is there a 'more compatible' HDMI cable I need between the pc and the switch?
-Is there something else I can try?

    :)

  2. new Dell U2415 dual monitors "black out" briefly with Windows 10

I'm having the same issue with one of my monitors (I have three of them), but I'm on Windows 7. I have also tried different video cards (including an ATI one, not just Nvidia), and the issue persists across all of them. Two of the three monitors are fine.

That said, I am also using the HDMI connection. I'm wondering if it might be something related to that. Perhaps an interruption in the signal? I tried switching the HDMI cable to the other HDMI port on the monitor, but still the same problem.

Are you using a straight HDMI cable, or a DVI-to-HDMI cable? If the latter, is it connected to a DVI-I or DVI-D port?

In my scenario, I'm using a DVI-to-HDMI cable and across the different video cards, I've been using the DVI-I port.

Two Video Cards, One recognized in Windows 10?

Just wondering why Windows 10 Build 1607 Build 150007.1000 sees my Nvidia Gt 740 Sc video card but doesn't see the on board Intel video card? Not that it matters much but I have a Philips 29FLp TV for a monitor which allows me to have both cards attached
to it on different HDMI inputs. Should there be a video issue in theory I can switch Video Cards take care of the issue and keep on computing! Win 10 not seeing the Intel card is a tad disturbing. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

HDMI Switches - Video card issue

Think HDMI version 1.4 good quality cables (without high speed internet) would be fine. Not many brands that make this kind of switcher to begin with. You want to run at least 3 items into one input on a projector ?

  5. Well, ya, I have 3 devices and one HDMI input.

Only be picture carrying through this HDMI, how will audio go through for say blu-ray ? Some switchers mention audio carry.
This site is decent and cheap quality items, i use a pigtail switch for 2 items once into 1 monitor and it worked good can't recall brand it was but this site shows one, but i did not need to worry about audio.
Other name brands can look at are Belkin, StarTech.com. As said not many known brands out there or great quality items for this unfortunately. Hit or miss.

  7. Never had any issues with audio, as its routed seperately through the AVR (coax, optical etc). The legacy AVR I have (a wonderful Harmon Kardon beast) does not have any HDMI input or outputs, so the video goes direct to the display ( and now hopefully via a switch)

As to the issue at hand, I am assuming a different make switch isn't going to solve the problem. I am hoping I can disable something on the video card.

I suppose there are some other pricey solutions, like get a new modern AVR and let it do the HDMI switching..... but I don't want to put a beautiful HK out to pasture or set it up in another room where it would be overkill. It might however be the only option.

Another option is a new PC or Kodi box...but I would still need the same switch, so no guaranty that would work

And a new projector, with multiple inputs, is not going to happen.

HDMI Switches - Video card issue

Well, only looking at 720p with this projector in this day and age that is even coming closer to 4K resolution, as i could not live with under 1080p. This is not as you know a A/V forum, i have interest in this for many years ,not know much about your present PC making it multimedia system. Not familiar with KODI box. Wonder why the Video card is giving you issues.

I have a Denon A/V receiver, i was mostly into Home Theater System without the use of PC that much even though my PC system is capable. Figured you maybe using COAX or Optical for Audio, just asked in case.
Hate to keep trying too many switches, read rating reviews.

  9. Ya, I'll try the av forums re the HDMI switcher. But it's the PC that's giving me the issue (other devices are fine) , so thought I might get some driver/ setting clues in this forum.

As a aside, I do like Denon as well, and picked one up last year for my main home theatre with Windows 10/Kodi(XBMC) , ROKU, BluRay, Cable and 4k display on the way.

The video card issue, is for the basement theatre: older PC,, older AVR, older 720p projector. Still, it's awesome on 102" screen, and would like to get it to work with a switch, if possible.

So even single into the projector the Video card has given you issues ? Try some settings in Catalyst software ?

  11. Video card direct to Projector is fine.
Video card to Switch to Projector - issue - no output to the display (even though the switch LEDs show that it is recognizing the input ( from PC) and the output (to Projector)

I completely disconnected the VGA to get that permanently out of the equation as keep the PC as a single display unit. I went through dozens of Catalyst options ( there are hundreds) and optimized everything for a 720p display. All works nicely. I then powered off, reconnected it via the switch and rebooted. PC reboots, switch LEDs come on, but no output. Reboot and rewire without the switch - normal. The cable to the display is common. The cable to the switch is a variable so I could try swapping cables but pretty sure they are all the same. The display is HDMI 1.0 so that not very demanding.

But the switch works fine for other device

I wrote tech support at ADM/ATI to see what they say. Just found the support email for iogear (support@iogear.com ) so will give them a shout.

I think I may need to bite the bullet here on a new AVR to simple take care of this the HDMI switching nonsense and redeploy my faithful HK elsewhere. The PC is old too, but has been tweaked over the years with SSD drive, the video car d and Windows 10. It too may need to be redeployed if it doesn't play nicely with other devices, and I could explore a newer PC or HTPC or XBMC box. Regardless, a new AVR would help.

O.k., definitely Card does not like the switch. See what AMD/ATI has to say, not sure how there support is and will be on this issue. One thing i am not seeing is how does the audio from PC then get back to the Receiver in all this ? Most i do right now with my A/V receiver is through the network play music from free sites like Pandora or use other pay sites forget them all have to look at manual and since just upgrading to Windows 10 and not having receiver long. Mostly see here Web Controls through Network connections, so buy another make sure has WiFi or ethernet.

HDMI audio disabled : all audio out from PC is via optical out port, to optical in port on AVR. Recall I am dealing with legacy equipment.

Yes i recall mention of that ,just wondering how you were doing it, i do still have older receivers with optical and coaxial. Heard Coaxial is slightly better then optical, but if do not have a choice for now optical better then composite (RCA jacks).

  15. PROBLEM FOUND AND SOLVED.

For the benefit of others who may be using PC's with HDMI switches., thought I would bring closure to the saga.

    1) I heard back from ATI/AMD - to their credit they did understand my question and did reply quickly. They suggested the standard troubleshooting tips I already tried (ie other devices, other cables), but did not offer any specific settings to try, so no real success there.

    2) I heard back from IOGEAR, also quickly. They asked that I call in, which I did and spoke to a tech. Similar troubleshooting tips, but to their credit, they also suggested I try it with an optional 5V/1A power supply - which I thought was an excellent tip - but it didn't help.

TURNS OUT ONE OF THE HDMI SWITCH PORTS IS BAD! .. Yup I tried all sorts of combinations and cables and connections, but I must have been using the same combination of ports!. So ports 1,2 and 3 are good but port 4 is dead.

If a switch replacement works, I am good to go, and can defer a new AVR purchase.

If the switch replacement also has a faulty ports, or if it becomes faulty over time, then its a QA issue, and I'm done with switches, and a new AVR will be in the works.

    End of saga.
