Windows 10: HEIC images fuzzy using HEIF image extensions

iphone has moved to using HEIC for the image format so now they have to be converted before you can view them on a PC.


I have downloaded the HEIF Image Extensions app by Microsoft from the App Store but when I use it although the thumbnails I can view look fine when I open the images they are fuzzy/pixelated. What can I do about this, it's really annoying especially as these days, like most people, I mainly view my images online rather than printing them out.

HEIF Image Extensions

My Samsung S10 creates .heic pics and I have installed the HEIF image extensions from MS-Store.

I get no confirmation, only this: "Thank you. We're attempting to install on your device"

My pics is still not visible in W10. Doubleclicking displays the same old msg; "You need to install codecs from MS Store"

I then installed the iMazing HEIC-converter and get this msg: "Some files where not recognized as valid HEIC-files".

(My .heic files are downloaded from Google Photo w10 File Explorer).

Is the HEIF image extensions not installed or is my Samsung S10 producing incompatible files?

ps: I have now disabled the HEIC-saving in S10 and new pics will be stored as jpeg.

Actually, I got started on all of this because of precisely that article. After I downloaded the heif image extension, I could have sworn I opened heic files and decided not to download the video extension. I must have been wrong. I will try again.

Heif Image Extension

Actually, I had not downloaded the hevc video extension, just the heif image extension. I later read that both were needed to view heic photos, but I was able to view them with just the heif extension until today. Not sure what the issue is. I am reluctant
to try the video extension because I read a lot of very negative reviews apart from the fact that they charge a nominal fee. I'll check out copytrans. Thanks again.
