    Thanks everyone - 'problem' solved.

    As spunk indicated, the answer was it was the card reader. (not a rogue USB stick as I originally thought.)
    With the benefit of looking back - I realised that I had just recently found that the software re the SD card was missing and installed accordingly. This then generated Disk (F) in This PC window.

    Thanks again everyone for your suggestions and time (feel a little guilty that I did not realise the obvious *Redface!)
