Windows 10: Help mkv movie files on external HDDs are steadily becoming corrupted

I am having issues with Video files that previously played perfectly fine, in fact for one of the videos I know for sure it was okay earlier today as watched on my server but now it is corrupt/I am getting the following message.


Missing codec

This item was encoded in a format that's not supported.

There are other files also on the drive that are the same codec and are working.


I am unplugging my drives as I have so far lost 50% of my movies,


MS are you aware of any issues in Disk Compression or Large files in the last update?


Anti Virus is up to date and running

Software to convert .mkv movie to .avi

You're trying to convert to DVD, Cash? convertxtodvd will do mkv files, but you have to remove the subs from the mkv with mkvtoolnix and mkv wizard (wizard is just a GUI for toolnix), then you can just manually add the subs in convertxtodvd. Convertxtodvd also joins the movies together by default, just like a chapter break. I have a few tips and tricks, as I convert a good bit of Anime to DVD and such. PM me if you need help.

Oh, and I suggest sticking with the CCCP. It's much less likely to have conflicts than the Vista Codec Pack.

 

Problem with mkv Files

Corrupted file RAR

If the archive has been created using WinRAR, why don't you try WinRAR itself? It has a built-in repair feature for repairing corrupted archive (ZIP as well as RAR). Follow the steps given below:

• Open WinRAR application in your system.
• Now click on File tab > Open or simply press Ctrl+O.
• A small window "Find Archive" will pop up. Locate the corrupt RAR archive from your system directory and select it.
• Now click Open button.
• Click Tools tab > Repair archive or simply press Alt+R.
• Again a small window "Repairing File name.rar" will pop up.
• Now click Browse to select a location to save the repaired archive.
• Check the box "Treat the corrupt archive as RAR" and click OK.
• WinRAR will start repairing of corrupt RAR archive. Once it gets completed click Close.
