Windows 10: [HELP] Windows Update keeps failing to update

I'm struggling to download the latest update for my Windows 10 Lenovo laptop (even before and now with the May 12 update). When I try to download it, I keep getting this error (0x80004005) and it fails. I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it detects issues with BITS - "The requested service has already been started. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182."

I then looked up that error message and started following along this article. I tried method 2, which said that nothing was wrong with BITS. I went on to method 3 and no issues were identified either. I found issues with method 4, where the first command (net stop wuauserv) gave this message “The wuauserv service is not started. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521”.

With this new error, I googled it and found this article that I then started to follow Fix #1. To be specific, I started the “Windows Update Medic Service” – not sure if there’s supposed to be one that only says “Windows Update”. BITS was running already when I checked on it. Moving on to Fix#2, the stop wuauserv command still does not work and gives me the same error message that the service is not started. I had already renamed the SoftwareDistribution file as well so trying the command again tells me “A duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found.” When trying the command “net start wuauserv”, I am told “the service could not be started. A system error has occurred. System error 2 has occurred. The system cannot find the file specified.” When trying to move on to Fix#3, the REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL command does not go through.

At this point, I don’t know what to do to resolve this issue and update my computer. This has gotten pretty frustrating as I can’t find much information to go about resolving this, and not sure where to go since what is supposed to succeed fails instead and I am struggling to find further information for failed operations. I hope that someone here can help me out or point me in the right direction.

Yea, that was going to be my next suggestion, if "Safe mode" did not work... I didn't want to scare him just yet.. *Toast :toast: There is a new feature in Windows 8 that will let you go back to a fresh install with just a few clicks. It should help a lot non pro's to start over fresh. *Toast :toast: But this is no help to him.. *Toast :toast:

Hi,

I had once a similar issue like yours, i.e. not able to update Windows 7. What I did to solve the problems is:

- go to control panel, then to "Troubleshouting" > "System and Security" > "Fix problems with Windows update" > click "Advanced" > choose "Apply repairs automatically".

And Windows will start detecting the issues and will repair "Windows update components". The problems should be fixed now, close the program, restart the PC, and see if the mentioned steps have fixed the problems you mentioned.

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time
