    Help with hard disk "corruption"

Six months ago I built a new system using ADATA PCIe 128GB NVMe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 SSD. Windows 10 Pro. No problems at all, use the PC to record cable tv (separate drive).

Been using Paragon Backup Restore 16 to do weekly backups on the C drive. Working great for 20+ weeks. Until yesterday, process gets to 99% then says "unable to read from source disk". Paragon support says the C drive has corruption, recommended chkdsk /f /r, which I did and it found no errors. I also tried ADATA's own software test tool and it also reports nothing wrong. So I went to C drive > properties > tools > error checking- it found errors and successfully corrected them. But running Paragon backup- it again gets to 99% then says "unable to read from source disk". Next, I purchased Hard Disk Sentinel Pro and did a surface scan which finds CRC errors and bad clusters, but says it repaired them and disk is 100% healthy. I have run HDS surface scan 3 times and it keeps finding/repairing the same things over and over. Lastly, I tried DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth then sfc /scannow. That found and successfully repaired quite a lot of stuff. But again - running Paragon backup it again gets to 99% then says "unable to read from source disk". And HDS surface scan still finds the exact same bad stuff.

Meanwhile the PC runs fine, records tv shows perfectly, never fails to boot, never fails a windows update, etc... I just can't take a backup anymore!

I can provide more details/logs and try more things. If someone can make suggestions.

    :)

    Help with hard disk "corruption"

A hd has engineering track which it maps bad blocks to its only when thats full it shows up on the disk so there must be a fair few bad block they cant be repaired but can be written as bad so there not used. Its only a matter of time before you start loosing data so a new drive is the best bet. If the bad bits are neer the end of the drive you may get away with it for a bit by shrinking c and leaving bad bit with no parition

The drive is six months old. It has a 5 year warranty. How do I go about proving the drive is bad if the manufacturer test software says nothing is wrong?

SMART reports on Hard Drive Sentinel Pro and Crystal Disk Info both say 100% good.
No normal scans detect any issues.
Issues only show in HDS surface scan and/or trying to run a Paragon backup.

Something doesn't add up here, unless you've been running the PC 24/7. Crystal Disk Info shows the drive's 'Power on Hours' as 4949 - that's nearly 7 months in total.

The drive seems healthy, so any corruption may be logical rather than physical. From an admin command prompt run CHKDSK /F to schedule a full disk check at the next boot up.

Yep, this is a 24/7 media server machine. Never sleeps.
Already done chkdsk /f /r twice - no errors found.

Was the backup and restore a clone or an image?

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    1) sfc /scannow
    2) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    5) chkdsk /x /f /r
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight.

    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /x /f /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y
    reboot
    6) Use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer > copy and paste > notepad > save to desktop > post an image into the thread
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials

    7) Run HD Tune: HD Tune website
Post images for the results of each of these tabs:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan
For the Health scan please scroll up and down and post several images if necessary so that all of the rows are visible.

Just a little modification to what zbook said in 5 above.

    5) chkdsk /f /v /r /x
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight.

Basically the same command with just /v switch added.

No multitasking when check disk runs. Leave it alone. Do not abort check disk midway for any reason. ( And for that reason run it overnight and go to sleep so that your hands and mind are off *Smile )

So far so good. I had already done these before. Restore health corrected a lot of stuff. This confirms it is all clean. More to come....

    HD Tune:
-benchmark Aborts in less than 5 seconds saying Read Error
-health does not populate at all / blank and keeps saying next update with a countdown
    -error scan (see screenshot)

Hard Disk Sentinal screenshot says there are 4 "bad" sectors, and zero "damaged".
Crystal Disk Info screenshot says there are 4 "damaged" sectors.

Am I correct to say, a re-partition/format/clean install would clear this problem?
What about restoring from last good Paragon backup disk image (Feb 10)?

    The chkdsk report:
The MFT mirror is different from the MFT.
Correcting errors in the Master File Table (MFT) mirror.
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

    When using Paragon please clarify:
    a) always images
    b) always clones
    c) sometimes images and/or clones

The part of the drive that is used by Windows can be modified so that there are no bad blocks.
