  1. Help with 'Problem with wireless adapter or access point' error

    Hi all,

I've done extensive research and testing and gotten nowhere. This happened ~1 week ago, and then righted itself without any intervention half way through the day (I had tethered to my mobile and realised the tether had dropped and internet was back).

Happened again yesterday afternoon. My mobile phone is connected to the same WiFi so I use my laptop to connect to a hotspot. This connection works 100%, doesn't drop, always connects but understandably it's a little slower.

Specs: Windows 10, Asus laptop. Qualcom Wireless Network Adapter. Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.356).

When I ran diagnosis it told me it was a dns error, I tried Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, and OpenDNS) but that didn't work and the erro then changed to the 'Problem with wireless adapter or access point' error.

    Actions undertaken:
    1. Changed to both Google and OpenDNS
    2. Ensured power settings have network adapter at maximum
    3. Removed and re-added wireless profile
    4. Flushed DNS, restarted the winsock (netsh Winsock reset)
    5. Tested ping, cannot ping any address
    6. Windows shows connection as 'No internet, secure' - router does not recognise laptop as connected
    7. Used Snappy Driver Installer to update wireless network adapter, then found the driver update on Atheros website and verified that the driver version was the same
    8. Uninstalled wireless network adapter, and restarted so Windows could reinstall
    9. Tried setting network address to the static address of my adapter

My laptop is unchanged position and approximately half a meter from the router.

    Here is the diagnosis snippets:

The only other thing I note is there is a Windows Update (dated from prior to the first instance of this issue) which downloads but doesn't install. It's KB4549951.

I'm sure there are other steps I performed but these are the main ones that come to mind.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

    :)

Problem with wireless adapter or Access point

Hi TurnMarshall, I'm Graeme, an independent adviser here to help.

There could be two causes for the dropouts - your WiFi adapter or potentially your wireless router.

I'd advise firstly reinstalling the drivers for your WiFi adapter, which may resolve the issue. Here are the steps:

    - Press Windows Key+X and choose Device Manager.

    - Find your WiFi adapter in the list.

    - Right-click it and choose Update Driver.

    - If that doesn't work, try uninstalling it and then scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver.

Once you've done that, see if the problem persists. You can then try rebooting your router to see if that fixes the issue.

Otherwise, let me know how you go and I'll see what the next step is! Thanks!
