Here are the Top Feature Requests of Windows 11 users

Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system has been out for less than two months. The operating system is running on millions of devices, and it is clear that some of the users who run these devices have opinions on the new operating system.

One of the locations to check for feedback is the official Feedback Hub. Users may give feedback to Microsoft, other users may vote for the suggestions, and it happens that Microsoft responds to the requests from time to time as well.

Neowin parsed the Feedback Hub to create a top 10 list of Windows 11 user requests. Here is the full listing sorted by votes:

    1. Bring back the ability to move the taskbar to the top and sides of the screen on Windows 11
    2. Bring back right-click for Task Manager option on taskbar in Windows 11
    3. Update the Windows 11 Start menu to support putting pinned apps into groups / folders
    4. Update the Windows 11 taskbar to support dragging and dropping files onto the app icons to open them in / transfer them to that app
    5. Update the Windows 11 taskbar to support never combining app icons and showing labels
    6. Update the Windows 11 taskbar to support using small icons option that Windows 10 had
    7. I want the taskbar clock in Windows 11 to be available on all my monitors and not just my primary monitor
    8. Remove the TPM requirement in determining Windows 11 eligibility
    9. I would like to be able to turn off the Recommended section in the Start menu and have the whole area disappear in Windows 11
    10. I want to have the option to turn off news in Widgets so they no longer display there

Most requests want the restoration of features that Microsoft removed from Windows 11. The vast majority covers taskbar-related changes: six of the ten requests with the most upvotes ask for taskbar-related changes.

Microsoft did remove several options from the Windows 11 taskbar, including the ability to place it at the top or sides of the screen, drag & drop support, or the option to right-click to open the Task Manager.

At least one option, the ability to change the icon size to small, is still available, but only through Registry edits or the use of third-party apps, and not directly

Two requests are Start Menu related. The first asks Microsoft to restore the option to create groups and folders of pinned items on the Start Menu, the second to get rid of the Recommended section entirely.

Two entries ask Microsoft to remove the TPM requirement of Windows 11 and add an option to turn off the news feature of the Widgets app.

Microsoft responded to some of the requests, but only one, the ability to display date and time on a secondary display, has found its way into a developer channel build. It looks as if the majority of requests won't be reimplemented by Microsoft.

Now You: do you agree with the requests? Have any requests of your own to add?

  2. Windows 7 top feature request list leaked to the public

With Windows still managing to find its way to over 95 percent of the desktop computers sold each year, it's not surprising that one can find plenty of people interested in giving their feedback about what future versions of Windows should be able to do.

A few years ago, before Windows Vista had even shipped, Microsoft sent out a wish list form asking people what features they would like to see in the next version of Windows, currently code-named Windows 7. The top wished-for features in this list were recently leaked to the public and have popped up at various sites (e.g., Neowin). While anonymous sources at Microsoft tell us that they bear no relationship to the actual feature set Microsoft is currently writing for Windows 7, the list does provide interesting insight into what the Windows-using public most wants from Windows.

The features are listed in no particular order, but they break down into various categories depending on what part of Windows the feature request falls under. Many requests for improvements in Internet Explorer, such as a session restore function, are fairly obvious wishes for features that already exist in competitive products such as Firefox and Opera. Other suggestions, such as a tabbed Windows Explorer, look for features from web browsers to migrate into the general user interface.

Some of the feature requests are clearly unrealistic, such as the desire to "back up" Xbox 360 games to the PC (yeah, I don't think Microsoft will be doing that one). Others are minor user interface enhancements that would be nice additions but wouldn't really change the Windows experience, such as a progress bar when hibernating the system. However, there are a few that make good sense and would be welcome additions to the operating system, such as a built-in video and audio codec manager.

A Windows 7 insider who wishes to remain anonymous told Ars that the leaked feature list was gathered before any real development on Windows 7 was started, and readers should not expect to see requests from the list necessarily implemented in Microsoft’s next major Windows release.
