Here’s how Windows 10 runs on Raspberry Pi 4 and 3

Developers have finally installed ARM-optimized version of Windows 10 on the Raspberry Pi 4 after some people managed to get it running on the Raspberry Pi 3 in the first half of 2019.

Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 3 officially support the IoT Core version of Windows 10, which is not same as the version of Windows 10 that runs on a desktop but is a stripped-back release for low-power computer board.

For example, Windows 10 IoT Core won’t let you run the traditional Win32 apps or even boot into the desktop. The IoT allows you to run a single UWP app at a time and the real purpose of the OS on Pi is to run small applications, which are designed for diminutive computer board.

Fortunately, there’s a new guide for getting Windows 10 on ARM to work on the Pi 3 B+ and Pi 4B using an unsupported technical preview build. Unlike IoT, Windows 10 ARM is ARM-targeted spin of the OS, which comes with a traditional desktop and Win32 apps support via emulation.

Developer Marcin has managed get Windows 10 on ARM running on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and he has also published a detailed guide.

How to install Windows 10 on Raspberry Pi 4

    • Download UEFI firmware from here and extract it to FAT32 formatted MicroSD card.
    • Download Windows 10 ARM64 Build from here. Only Build 17134 has been tested, but any newer build that passes OOBE should be compatible as well.
    • Download ISO compiler from here. As per the dev, this would create the ISO file but you’ll still need the install.wim from sources folder.
    • Download ‘Windows on Raspberry’ from here. This would install Build 17134 or newer into a USB storage device and GPT needs to be selected.

After downloading these files, you’ve to run Command Prompt and follow the steps outlined here.

It’s worth noting that some features of Raspberry Pi 4 may not work with Windows 10 on ARM. For example, you can only use the Type-C USB port for charging and OTG. Windows 10 ARM also limits the RAM to only 1GB and Broadcom auxspi controller driver is not working.

Developers are also porting Windows 10 on ARM to Android phones such as the Galaxy S8, OnePlus 6 and Xiaomi Mi Mix

Windows 10 can (sorta) run on the Raspberry Pi 3

A user called @NTAuthority on Twitter managed to run full Windows 10 on the Raspberry Pi 3 platform in some spare time.

It currently has all of the features of Windows 10 for ARM, but it currently only recognizes 1 CPU Core instead of all 4 cores the Pi has (just needs some tweaking), only uses software acceleration for graphics (because Microsoft didn't finish the VideoCore
IV drivers, only has stubs), and doesn't have working USB drivers (other than for a basic keyboard).

However, it would be truly awesome if Microsoft decided to pour some resources into getting Windows 10 running on the Raspberry Pi 3. It is possible as shown by @NTauthority -
it just needs more development time. @NTAuthority is quite busy with other projects, however, but maybe a community effort could get this through...

The terrible performance numbers (100% CPU usage) is due to it only recognizing, for now, 1 CPU core when there are actually 4 cores in the Pi, that the CPU is used for rendering the display (it can't use the GPU in the Pi yet), as stated before. However,
even when the Windows desktop is fully loaded, it only uses 1/2 the RAM available. This is running on the Pi 3 Model B, and not the brand new Pi 3 Model B+ which is even faster. It can be done - just needs some work.

EDIT: Due to the USB Drivers being missing, Ethernet does not work. Drivers for WiFi are also not written.

Overall, to continue the work, it would require:

    - Writing a WiFi driver

    - Writing a USB + Ethernet combo chip driver

    - Writing sound driver for HDMI Audio / 3.5mm jack

    - Writing a DirectX for VideoCore driver (stubs exist already, only work with 1 demo app)

    - Fixing the single core limitation to see all four cores (according to @NTauthority, not a large deal, just a little meddling most likely)

    - Perhaps a Microsoft discount? Paying a $120 license for, well, $35 hardware is... Here’s how Windows 10 runs on Raspberry Pi 4 and 3 ;)

@NTAuthority is very busy with other projects, but who knows? Maybe something could happen in a community project or something similar.

Overall, it works - but it lacks a lot of the drivers necessary to use much of the Pi's hardware fully.

Trouble seeing Raspberry Pi in Networks

I have a Raspberry Pi that is running samba to share with the Windows network. In Run, I enter \\Raspi and it comes right up with the appropriate shares. That means the samba shares are actually there, yet when I open Networks, all my computers are there except the Raspi.

    To try to fix this:
    1. I rebooted both the Pi and my PC
    2. I double checked the samba configuration and checked it with testparm
    3. I made certain the samba and pi passwords are the same
    4. I found a list of PC services that need to be running and set them all to automatic

Again, all my PC's and some devices like my Roku and printer are visible, just not the Pi.

    Suggestions?
