New Windows 10 application usage in Dev Center

Recently, we released a new feature that provides app usage information to developers in Dev Center.

This feature is included in all new Windows 10 (UWP) package submissions and allows developers to view app usage statistics, including user sessions, active users, session length, page views, and custom events created specifically for an app (for example how many times users reach a certain level in the game). App developers are provided aggregated statistics only, and not any information about individual users or devices.

How to enable application usage

Build a UWP package in Visual Studio 2015.

Select “Show telemetry in the Windows Dev Center” checkbox (which adds the Visual Studio Application Insights SDK to your project).

All Windows 10 app submissions will include the telemetry SDK. If you don’t want to use this feature, please uncheck this box to disable app usage information

Select “Enable richer analytics with Application Insights” if you have an Azure subscription and want to see the data and do deeper analysis in the Azure portal

Submit the packages to the Store. Data will show up after users download the updated package and start using the app.

View the report in the “Analytics/Usage” page in Dev Center. The report will show:

An Instrumentation Key has been created for the app

App usage telemetry for the app, if enabled

[UWP] all UWP application windows are not displayed anymore after a lot of start/kill of any UWP application

Hello,

This issue seems linked to the Windows Anniversary Update (build 10.0.14393,
also reproduced on build 14905.rs_prerelease.160811-1739) and the new UWP lifecycle introduced with it, since this issue was not there before.

The test scenario is simple:

1. start any UWP application (in my example the windows calc.exe, the default Windows 10 calculator application)

2. wait 0.5 second

3. kill the same UWP application

4. repeat the 1-2-3 steps 5000 times

This scenario is basically reproducing an automated test environment.

The expected result is that the tested application will always be displayed correctly.

The actual result is that the tested application is not displayed anymore after a various number of loops (between 200 and 800). It looks like it is running in the background since the process can be seen in the task manager.

When the UWP application window can't be displayed, the scope of the issue is much more important: no UWP content can be displayed anymore (Edge browser or Windows settings, etc).

The way to recover from this is to log out from the user session and log in again.

Here is a python script to reproduce the issue:

New Year, New Dev: Developing your idea into a UWP app

In the last post, we introduced you to a video series from Bob Tabor that teaches the fundamentals of C#. In this post, you’ll learn how to put those new (or re-sharpened) C# skills to use as we explore UWP (Universal Windows Platform) development in the Windows 10 Development for Absolute Beginners course from Bob Tabor. With little or no prior experience with XAML (pronounced “Zammal”), you’ll learn how to use XAML and C# to create amazing Windows 10 UWP applications, get those apps ready for publishing and see them run on UWP devices ranging from Xbox One and PC, to mobile and even Raspberry Pi.

Even if you’re an experienced UWP developer, just like in the last post, you may find that there are areas you’d like to brush up on. You can jump to any of the course’s 80 videos and also explore the companion sample code on GitHub.

Exploring the Course

The Ultimate Beginner Series course has two conceptual parts. In the first half, Bob Tabor explains the concepts, patterns and features of a UWP application. In the second half, you will build out four fleshed-out demo applications. From “File > New” to submitting your app to the Windows Store, these samples will get you ready to build and publish your first (or next) app!

First Half

Let’s take a high-level look at just some of the topics you’ll see in the front half of the course (to see the full list visit the course site).
