hi dpi issue when exiting some fullscreen programs

"200%" dpi 4k desktop but use fullscreen @ 1080 for most games.
when exiting a lot of those games, programs that were opened in the background when the game was in fullscreen (eg... browser, file explorer) loses the dpi upscale until you quit and restart the program.

any idea how to fix that? (aside from setting desktop to 1080 and use 100% dpi)

    thanks.

    :)

  2. Disable display scaling on high DPI settings

Hi there, I have some games here that I'm having a problem with. In Windows 8.1, 8, and 7 when you get the game to run in fullscreen with the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" unchecked and Fullscreen scaling in NVIDIA control panel, the game
will stretch to fit the screen which is what I am looking for. Windows 10 keeps checking the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" even when I click on Apply then Ok. The game will run in a fullscreen with black bars on each side.

What I'm asking is, if there is some way for me to make sure that my games run in stretch to fit the screen and to make sure the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" is left unchecked? I've tried different compatibility modes with the same results,
and as a NVIDIA user Fullscreen scaling is the only option besides aspect ratio and no scaling. Plus I've checked "Override the scaling mode set by games and programs" with Perform scaling on: GPU.

  3. Windows Photo Viewer Disable DPI Scaling (Slideshow High DPI problem)

When viewing a slideshow (fullscreen) (F11) with Windows photo viewer at 150% DPI Scaling on a 4K monitor only part of the image is shown! The DPI scaling should be ignored when fullscreen. Anyone knows how to fix this bug??

The strange thing is that with PNG and JPG images Photo Viewer starts with DPI scaling.

However when opening a BMP photo viewer starts without DPI scaling and full screen slideshow works fine.

So a better question would be how to always start photo viewer without DPI scaling.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately it's a dll and compatibility settings are not available...

It has been discussed many times. If you are using a Flatscreen or Projector, you will have issues with fonts, regardless how large you make the size of the font and lower the resolution. This has been known for a very long time.

i'm not sure you are understanding me.
4k desktop at 200% dpi works perfectly fine normally. but after i use some exclusive fullscreen games at a lower resolution, firefox/explorer that were open in the background (whilst the fullscreen game was running) will display as if they are at 100% dpi. occasionally minimising and maximising the firefox/explorer window will bounce them back to 200% dpi without closing and re-opening firefox/explorer.

closing fire/explorer and reopening them definitely show them at the normal 200% dpi, but it is tedious. the icons / taskbar on the desktop remains at 200% dpi without issue. similarly, vlc and 7zip retains the 200% dpi

I fully understand what you are stating and this discussion has been brought up on here many times, along with discussed to the point that the Dead horse has nothing more to beat from it. Large flatscreen's, higher resolution flatscreen's will make any font look like crap. Until someone is able to design a set of fonts that will be able to look decent on large sized flatscreen's, it is going to not change then.

nevermind. i'm pretty sure we are talking about different things. the fonts aren't blurry. that's not my issue.

my issue is some programs stay at 200% dpi whilst other drop back to 100% after exiting a lower res fullscreen. ie. certain programs have certain parts of text go extremely tiny.

Nope, same thing, you are not going to do a search for the fact that this question you are asking has been discussed over and over. The issue with larger sized screen is how the pixels spread out. With that, fonts designed for a smaller screen under 21" is going to look very garish on a large sized screen that is over 42". Just because it states 4K/UHD on your fancy flatscreen, does not mean that graphics from a computer are going to look as good as you see them on tv, which even those fonts do not render properly. Until someone designs a font that is for large sized flatscreen's that are over 21", you will be stuck with junk on the screen.

He is not saying that the fonts look bad, he says that the size of the fonts change.

He says he uses the option 'Scale and layout' at 200%, but after he plays a game at fullscreen @ 1080, some (or all) the programs that where open in the background, the 'Scale and layout' has dropped back to 100%. Closing and reopening will make them go back to the 200% setting.

I don't know how to fix it, but in my eyes, it's more a windows bug than anything else.

That is the same thing I told him. The whole font issue has been around since the first time that they could figure out how to connect a computer to a tv at a low refresh and resolution rate. Fonts are created for small sized screens with lower resolution. They are not created for very large screens and high resolution, unless you take the time to find the proper fonts or design your own.

The biggest issue is that people get flat screens and never turn off all of the manufacturer default settings that cause the biggest problems. They want to keep blaming the operating system, which is not the case.

This is a subject that has been beaten to death since the late 70's.

Oh my god, are you people serious?

pzhndal asked a simple question and you keep replying about fonts and large screens like it's some sort of a meme.

The issue he was talking about wasn't about fonts looking blurred or pixelated. It's about the fact that other apps windows lose the 200% scaling and become tiny on his screen. Their elements become SMALLER, not BADLY STRETCHED.

I have a similar issue on my Surface Book using 200% system display scaling. Whenever I exit fullscreen from an app that used a lower resolution (let's say it's an old computer game running in 640x480) back to my desktop, all the open app windows get resized to the resolution that was used in the fullscreen mode.

As an example, let's say I had Chrome running. I don't maximize my windows, I like to be able to reach the desktop icons all the time, so my Chrome window takes up about 85% of my screen. If I run some fullscreen low resolution app and then close it and come back to the desktop, I will see that my Chrome window was resized and now sits in a corner, taking up about 15% of my screen area. Meaning I have to manually resize it back to the way it was every time.. And it happens with EVERY app that was running.

This is extremely annoying. This definitely has something to do with the 200% system scaling, as this bug is not present on my other regular DPI machine using 100%.

Has nobody else encountered this at all? It seems like a very obvious issue to notice, but strangely enough I wasn't able to find anything.

oddly, it seems to affect firefox but not chrome, for me, the last time i checked. i don't use chrome much.. i had both chrome and firefox open (as well as file explorer, 7zip and vlc) opened an exclusive fullscreen game @1080, exited it. chrome, 7zip and vlc, not to mention the desktop look perfectly normal whilst the text in firefox and file explorer was tiny. i think the window sizes remained the same - browsers maximised, the rest various sizes.

not quite sure how it's a font thing, seeing as chrome and firefox use the same fonts. times new roman and arial 16, aside from monospace bit and maybe not the same zoom.

the other odd thing is... it used to be minimising/maximising a window a few times would bounce the text sizes back to normal (could have been under 1511.. not exactly sure when it was - for both explorer and firefox.) . it doesn't do that anymore.

it's like the affected app thinks it's still in 1080 resolution (because it was in 1080 mode presumably @100%, in the background of the fullscreen game), when it should now be back at 4k @200% but doesn't know it. and yes.. i know it probably isn't remotely like a correct technical explanation.

    ---
sometimes? always? if firefox isn't maximised, the text won't go tiny (but that doesn't explain why a non-maximised file explorer still go tiny...)

forgot to say.. it's not just the text that goes tiny. but everything (icons/pics/etc)
