hiberfil.sys keeps updated while hibernation is disabled

    Hello to all,
    I have a Windows 10 (Version 1909 - OS build 18363.778) running on a Lenovo laptop (32GB RAM, 1TB SSD).
Right out of the box hibernation was disabled and it is still so as strongly recommended for SSD-based computers.
Today I by chance saw that the file hiberfil.sys (about 13GB) keeps being accessed and modified.
Could anyone explain why is it taking place and if it would be safe to simple delete this file (without being automatically regenerated by the OS)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Fernando.

    :)

    Deleting Hiberfil & Pagefile

Pagefile size depends on RAM, just find optimal value and stick to that.

If you use SSD and want more free space then disable System Restore. It is far more efficient than disabling hiberfil

After disabling hibernation hiberfil.sys gets deleted automatically.

  3. Windows 10 gets stuck booting with some laptop configurations if hibernation is enabled. Please make it easy to disable hibernation

    Open Administrator Command Prompt:

    • powercfg /H OFF <-- this will eliminate all hibernation types
    • powercfg /H REDUCED <-- this allows for a smaller hiberfil.sys, which only allows for Fast Startup.
    • powercfg /H /? <-- explains options
    powercfg /h /?

    POWERCFG /HIBERNATE <ON|OFF>
    POWERCFG /HIBERNATE /SIZE <PERCENT_SIZE>
    POWERCFG /HIBERNATE /TYPE <REDUCED|FULL>
    Alias:

    POWERCFG /H
    Description:

Enables/disables the hibernate feature or sets the hiberfile size.
    Parameter List:

    <ON|OFF> Enables/disables the hibernate feature.
/SIZE <PERCENT_SIZE> Specifies the desired hiberfile size as a percentage

of the total memory size. The default size cannot be

smaller than 40. This parameter will also cause

    hibernate to be enabled.
/TYPE <REDUCED|FULL> Specifies the desired hiberfile type. A reduced

    hiberfile only supports hiberboot.
    Examples:

    POWERCFG /HIBERNATE OFF
    POWERCFG /HIBERNATE /SIZE 100
    POWERCFG /HIBERNATE /TYPE REDUCED

Also, in Settings - Power & sleep - Additional power settings you can
Choose what the power button does
    .

There you can uncheck Turn on fast startup. That might eliminate this issue without disabling hibernation, if full hibernation actually still works well for you. You may just have one hardware component that is not resuming from sleep state
properly, but that can be hard to track down.

  4. hiberfil.sys keeps updated while hibernation is disabled

Is there a wayto manage the hiberfile sys onthe hardrive?

Hi AB. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

It should be the exact size of your installed RAM which writes itself to the hiberfile when it transitions from Sleep to Hibernate and shuts off. Then when you power back on it loads the Hiberfile (contents of RAM) which is faster than starting Windows.

If not then the way to flush it is to turn off Hibernate, restart PC and then turn back on as shown here:

    https://www.groovypost.com/howto/enable-hiberna...

    Fixes for Hibernate here:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
