Windows 10: Hmm... Overall I think Win8(.1 update 1) is better than Win10.

Whats with the comparison of people preferring a start menu to the charms bar

they do total different functions

 

Charms bar is dead in Windows 10, and what does that have to do with the Start Menu or Start Screen? Just because you've always done something a certain way doesn't mean its the best way to do something. *Wink

Overall I think 8.1 is the best OS to date in many ways of which I won't take the time here to explain other than I'm a keyboarder on a touch-centric OS. Touch-centricity actually made keyboarding quicker. It's the best of both worlds > Desktop and Modern. Overall navigation features to get tasks completed is far better. 10 is indeed a step backwards.

We all know 8 was an absolute mistake. I liked it, but didn't know how much I disliked it until MS fixed it with 8.1. Yet 8.1 was not a big seller to/for the "masses". So MS basically created communications via Insider app (which is a Modern Store app BTW) asking the "masses" what they want/like.

Strange thing is that MS already knew they had to "back the thing up" and release the first build booting to the desktop, therefore "desktop-centric" so as not to "feel" so Modern. Then add virtual desktops (which what I see not too many use) to make it feel even more desktop-centric. That's basically what this is all about > Win32 vs Modern. "Oh so the "masses" want the Start menu back? Here's a menagerie of the old Win32-looking menu mixed with the Modern Start screen menu". What a goofy mess IMO! Personally an absolute nightmare to navigate with a keyboard! Then to top it most of the "traditionalists" don't care for it either from what I see.

I think MS's ultimate plan is to "slow cook" everyone into a Modern OS much like 8.1 down the road with "slow-changing" continuous updates much like the Modern RT Settings app, Notifications app, and Cortana app that we see. Even the Start menu is RT. Eventually the Win32 desktop will disappear into a Rt/Modern one. Perhaps it'll take 5 years? 10 years? Who knows? Eventually it will. Time will tell.

I must ask myself why I would think I know more than the professionals that create OSs? And yet across all devices? I hope I'm not that egotistical.

hmmmm, these types of discussions are reminiscent of the Win7 / Win8 update discussions.
back then the mantra for some people was: Win7 is great ... Win8 sucks!I don't think either one of us is saying that Win10 sucks though and therein lies the difference.

Win10 is a good operating system - as is Win8, Win7, and Vista.-edit

By the time the slow-cook finishes - devices will not look anything like they do today. Hell, by then - the machines will have completely taken over and we will be subservient to their wishes and desires - a complete role reversal.

I wonder what wishes and desires machines might have ????

Back on topic, we all know that windows 8 was like vista part 2 but for other reasons. I would tell my friends they could boot to desktop and install a third party smart menu to get the windows 7 feel. It would never sink in though for whatever reason they just didn't like the idea and would complain some more about the fisher price tiles and touch. It was a lost cause and now Microsoft wants to distance itself form 8 with 10.

I do really like windows 10 but I completely see where hippsieGypsie Is coming from when mentioning the start menu fells like an awkward mesh of both worlds. I guess I just learn to adapt and make do with what I have. Worst comes to worst There will probably be third party options that will bring back the start menus/screens we want.

 

I disagree with your statement "we all know that windows 8 was like vista part 2", if anything, I would say Win 7 was Vista part 2. I never used Vista until AFTER I used Win 7 and when I did actually use Vista, I wondered what people didn't like about it since it was very, very similar to Win 7. Aside from that you should refrain from assuming that "we" all "know" the same things you do.

As far as "the fisher price tiles", they're still there (as are Modern apps) in Win 10 but I don't hear anyone complaining about them now.
