seems like MS haven't learnt form things
they are doing the same again but in reverse this time

not tried the later builds of 10, but from what I did test, the desktop mode in win 8 series for me was nicer than the desktop on 10

not sure exactly how to explain, but 10 is forcing tablet gui elements onto the desktop and mixing them up with win32 elements and to me it doesn't know what it wants to be

Over time as win 10 is going to continue evolve, things should become much better, but for release in just over 6 weeks, win 10 is a strange hybrid

Except for start menu, I can't find anything in desktop mode that's different than in 8.1.

    Hi there

I'm not sure about "Tablety" stuff on Desktop -- My desktop runs as a desktop perfectly.

I don't mind the new start menu -- it's easy enough to remove those tiles you don't want. It's reasonably simple to pin programs to desktop (create short cut) just like it's always been - just Open file location of the app and then send to desktop via right mouse click. -- you can even send Metro / Modern apps to a desktop short cut too --It's a little more complex but easy enough - you don't need registry entries etc.

You can still use custom toolbars if you want to make decent cascadable menus.

So far with fairly few minor glitches I'm quite happy with W10 --runs nice and smoothly -- I've totally abandoned W8/8.1. I still keep a Windows XP machine (old high qualityphoto negative scanner I still use, plus some VINYL record cutting apps and an old HP plotter plus blue print printer) and a W7 system for running a SAP GUI which still won't work on W10 (yet).

Everything else works more or less OK -- just some minor quirks with networking (Windows has always been a bit "dubious" with networking anyway).

SAP will fix the SAPGUI so eventually I'll just use the XP VM -- my VINYL cutting stuff I started as a hobby is beginning to turn quite lucrative these days --amazing in the days of Spotify etc people still want and like VINYL !!.

W10 on TOUCH laptops and devices works reasonably well too -- but even on TOUCH devices things like MICE are easily the best tools for cutting and pasting large chunks of text / other documents (spreadsheets, Power point stuff etc).

I think Ms has on the whole got this right --it won't please everybody but they've done a lot to repair the Win 8 Fiasco IMO.

Updating for FREE to a load of people is also a master stroke.

    Cheers

I know what you mean. I've used Ubuntu for quite a few years(as a back up OS), and when they switch to the Unity desktop a lot of people didn't like it, but I loved it. It's a perfect solution for a multi-device desktop. It's not so MPD like 10 & 8, I find it perfect. Microsoft should try something along those lines.

  5. for me what I was meaning was the mixture of modern and traditional

so you open notepad, paint, wmp you have an almost constant feel, File, Edit etc as your options on the top bar
you then use Edge and other modern interfaces you get a different look/feel

imo, if we are to merge everything onto the desktop, then consistency is needed to avoid confusion, If I use WMP in previous versions and then ms want people to use the new music app on the desktop, the navigation of it should be familiar

I can see confusion coming up with general usage

Maybe MS is still hoping everybody will go for Apps only not for legacy desktop SW. I guess SW developers will have to get on bandwagon and write programs to get on the track with W10 looks.

  7. I agree, I think that's the ultimate goal

not sure I like the idea, but it will make 10 more consistent if they do
as 10 is going to be constantly evolving, its going to be interesting seeing them do this

Hmm... Overall I think Win8(.1 update 1) is better than Win10.

I like windows 10 when I have now tried it almost a year or so. It's easy to start with if you come from windows 7 (the still by far biggest OS in terms of users), but it has some nice improvements some tools, like cmd.exe, taskmanager, copy dialog, that we previously have had to replace with third party programs (powershell, process explorer, teracopy). And more.

One thing that bothers me a little: when I first installed windows 10 I mistyped my username, and this profile gets backed up in cloud. So now if sign in with my microsoft account it automatically fetches that profile, making me have two user profiles in windows 10. So I have chosen not to use microsoft account, but then I can't install modern apps from the store.

Anyone knows how to remove a faulty profile from the cloud? I suspect that in the long run it will be annoying to not login with a microsoft account.

I don't know what it would take for SW developers to get with the program and make applications that conform to windows themes, probably too lazy or too much work involved. Like this, even if only Apps are left, there's a lot of different looks from one to another one. I like to have legacy drop menu on top of programs (File, Edit, View etc), but that's me.
