Windows 10: HoloLens 2 Development Edition is now available in the United States

After strong demand for HoloLens 2, we are excited to announce availability of HoloLens 2 Development Edition in the United States. We are expanding to Canada, Germany, France, UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Italy by the end of the year.

HoloLens 2 Development Edition costs $3,500 and combines the capabilities of HoloLens 2 with Azure, Unity, and Pixyz to empower developers to build interactive experiences and render 3D holographic content with people, places, and things. "I often use HoloLens 2 for creating educational experiences. Previously, I used the device to make a foreign language flashcard app that gamifies French word and speech recognition. With Azure Cognitive Services, integrating Speech Translation was as simple as creating a SpeechTranslationConfig object and setting the target language for translation. I created the UI within Unity in literal minutes thanks to the UX building blocks that are part of the Mixed Reality Toolkit (MRTK). I am currently working on building an at-home museum exhibit using Azure Spatial Anchors and 3D objects provided by the Smithsonian. HoloLens Development Edition Updates

In the four months since we began shipping Microsoft HoloLens to our developer and commercial partners, we’ve been absolutely amazed at the innovation shown by the creative people and companies building real solutions using HoloLens. From training aircraft mechanics and flight crews, to get more out of their game, I’m inspired by the experiences you are creating.

In May, we announced the first major software update to Windows Holographic, and today, I’m excited to share our second major update: the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. This is our fastest and most reliable version yet. Some exciting changes are on tap with this release, as well as some new policies making it easier than ever for more developers to create the future of holographic computing.

We’ve fulfilled the orders for our first waves of developers, and today I’m pleased to announce that we’re expanding the program, making HoloLens Development Edition available to all developers and business customers in the United States and Canada. Developers looking to join our holographic journey can go to hololens.com and purchase up to five devices. No application required!

We’ve also heard that companies are looking for a solution they can confidently pilot and deploy in their enterprises, so today we are introducing the Microsoft HoloLens Commercial Suite, which includes the Development Edition hardware as well as enterprise features for added security and device management. Some of the Microsoft HoloLens Commercial Suite features include:

Kiosk mode. With HoloLens kiosk mode, you can limit which apps to run to enable demo or showcase experiences.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) for HoloLens. Your IT department can manage multiple HoloLens devices simultaneously using solutions like Microsoft InTune. You will be able to manage settings, select apps to install and set security configurations tailored to your organization’s need.

Identity. Azure Active Directory & next generation credentials with pin unlock.

Windows Update for Business. Controlled operating system updates to devices and support for long term servicing branch.

Data security. BitLocker data encryption and secure boot is enabled on HoloLens to provide the same level of security protection as any other Windows device.

Work access. Anyone in your organization can remotely connect to the corporate network through a virtual private network on a HoloLens. HoloLens can also access Wi-Fi networks that require credentials.

Windows Store for Business. Your IT department can also set up an enterprise private store, containing only your company’s apps for your specific HoloLens usage. Securely distribute your enterprise software to selected group of enterprise users.

HoloLens 2 expands to new markets this Fall

HoloLens 2 is currently available in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In these markets, industry-leading companies in manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and education are using enterprise mixed reality applications to improve the productivity and quality of work for firstline workers. As you can see in the video below, with HoloLens 2 and Azure, these organizations are simultaneously driving faster training and up-skilling of employees, decreased task and process completion time, and reduced error rates and waste driving global demand for these solutions.

Below are a few key news items that will expand our HoloLens 2 impact:

HoloLens 2 will begin shipping to Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in Q4 2020.

Online sales of HoloLens 2 will start on the Microsoft Store in July 2020.

In response to feedback from our customers and partners, we have just shipped a software update for HoloLens 2, which includes these exciting new capabilities:

Reconfigure and seamlessly set up new devices for enterprise production with Windows AutoPilot.

Enroll HoloLens with your Mobile Device Management system using a provisioning package.

Hand Tracking improvements.

Support for additional system voice commands to control HoloLens, hands-free.

Expanded USB Ethernet enables support for 5G/LTE dongles.
