    Home group/network sharing

I have a Desktop with Windows 7 and a Laptop with Windows 10. At an earlier date I was able to share files with both by turning on Home Group on Windows 7 and sharing folders in Network Sharing on my Laptop. I have since had to reinstall my Windows 10 on my Laptop; and after installing all the updates, I am now unable to share my files. I start a home group in Windows 7; open Network and Sharing folder on Laptop, opt to open network discovery, etc and nothing happens. Can use any advice.

    Thanks

    Patty

    :)

    Hi Rudi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

I would suggest you to follow the methods and check if it helps:

Method 1: I suggest you to run home group troubleshooter as below and check if it helps.

    • Type troubleshooting in the search area on the taskbar and select
      Troubleshooting
      .
    • Select View all on the top left corner.
    • Click Home Group.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2: Also try the below steps and check if it helps.

    • Turn off media sharing via Window Media Player on all the machines that show

up in Network as a Media Sharing Device.
    • Tools -> Options -> Library tab -> Configure Sharing... button
    • Uncheck "Share my media to:”
    • Uncheck "Find media that others are sharing" doesn't seem to do it, maybe

      require a reboot.

Hope this information was helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

  4. Home group/network sharing

How to share files or folder on a specific user on the network?

    Hi Mateenn,

Thank you for keeping us posted.

I really appreciate all your efforts in trying to fix this issue.

I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if that helps.

Share files using Windows Home Groups:

Home groups were introduced in windows 7 and are designed to simplify the process of sharing files between the various PC. A home group is created initially on one PC and then each of your other computers connect to it in
order to link them all together. Once you have joined the home group, you can then decide which libraries and file types you want to share such as pictures, Documents and music.

    To create a home group:

    • Open up the Start menu and search for home group.
    • Click on home group from the list of result that comes up.
    • Your PC will now perform a quick search for any existing home group. But in this case we need to create one. After a moment or two, you should see a button to create.
    • Tap this to create your home group.
    • You will now be walked through a quick guide to get the home group setup.
    • Tap next on the Windows that pops up to get started.
    • Now choose what types of files you want to share with others who join your home group and tap next to continue.
    • You home group will now be set up, and you will get a home group password generated. Make a note of this for other PC’s you want to join your network.
    • Press Finish, and we are now done with this PC.

    Joining a Home group:

    • Open up the start menu and search for home group.
    • Click on home group from the list of result that comes up.
    • Your PC will now perform a quick search for any existing home group and should find the one we just created. Tap Join to continue.
    • Type in the password you got from the setup previously.
    • You will now be asked what files you want to share within the home group.
    • Press Finish, and that’s the second PC now added to the home group.
    • Now simply repeat that process with any other PC’s you want to join to the home group too.
Accessing files in the Home group:

    • Now that you have connected your PC’s together, the next step is to actually find the files that you have shared within your home group. This is pretty easy as windows will show you the home group on the left hand sidebar
      within Windows Explorer.
    • So to access the files.
    • Open up Windows Explorer by clicking the Folder icon on your taskbar.
    • Look for home group on the left and click this.
    • You will then be shown all the computers in the home group, so click on the one you want to view.
    • Now you will see the shared files from that PC, so again simply click on the folder or file you are after.
    For reference:

I would suggest you to refer to the article given below and check if that helps.

    Share files and folders

All the above steps holds good for windows 10 as well.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please do let us know if you need any further assistance, we will be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.
