Microsoft has stated that SMB1 is turned off by default because of a vulnerability to Ransomware attacks. Look in Services and set Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication to Automatic-Delayed Start on each machine. This works without turning on SMB1.

Just tried it in a VM and it didn't work for me. VM is VirtualBox Fall Creators Update. I couldn't see the host or a NAS. Fired up SMB1 and they are both back. So I'll stick with SMB1 for the moment.

Not sure how it works in VM, but it worked as suggested by Microsoft for the six pcs I have networked. Hopefully Microsoft will come out with some fixes soon. *Wink

I'm probably not doing it right. The thing that I really need is access to the NAS.
It was behaving very strangely when SMB1 was turned off. It didn't show in explorer unless I rebooted the NAS but only for that windows session. I could access the shares by typing the address into explorer and get at the files.
My file backup program FreeFileSync would work if run manually but not if run on a schedule under my USERID. Really strange behaviour.

I don't think SMB1 is much of a risk running in VM. They are suggesting mapping the network drives, I have done that also and they show up every time. But the networks sometimes don't show and you do a reboot and they show, I have been patient, but I think its time for them to step up and fix the damn thing. *Rolleyes

I was just testing in a VM. I'm running it on the host also. I have Malwarebytes premium and my backup images are protected by Macrium Image Guardian so I think I'll be OK.

Yes, I wasn't too keen on turning Samba on, but it worked! And yes, the unpredictability of how the network manifests on any given day is frustrating. Also, if for example one sets file sharing on in Network & Sharing options, one should not have to tick any options hidden elsewhere, surely. There needs to be a discrete place to say "Yes, see my machine, and yes, see these folders etc".

Thanks to all for their contributions and good luck. I turned Samba on on my PC upstairs, rebooted, rebooted the served W7 PC downstairs and it could see my PC again. So that's better (as long as it lasts!)
